The cathedral has undergone three major upheavals and restorations. In the early 18th century, when the nave was roofless, following the collapse of the south-east tower, the architect, John Wood the elder of Bath, built a new cathedral beyond the roofless nave, in the style of an Italianate temple.

It occupies the bottom of a deep and narrow dell, a distinctive situation of many early ecclesiastical sites in Wales, including St David’s Cathedral and Llancarfan.
The Cathedral lies in the ancient “City of Llandaff” much of which is now a conservation area. Despite being surrounded on all sides by the bustling modern city of Cardiff, the Llandaff conservation area remains comparatively unspoilt and surprisingly tranquil.

Anglicans form the family of Christians closely related to the Archbishop of Canterbury. Whilst tracing their inheritance back to Christ and the earliest Christians and to the ancient Roman Catholic church, the sixteenth century Reformation was a crucial moment for Anglicanism.
‘Bishop’ comes from the Greek word for ‘overseer’. So a bishopis a senior Christian minister authorised to have oversight for God’s people. As well as duties given to deacons and priests, bishops confirm and ordain.
‘Deacon’ comes the Greek word for ‘servant’. Deacons in the Church in Wales have special roles within worship such as proclaiming the gospel. Traditionally, deacons have had responsibility for social care. Deacons often go on to be ordained priest.
‘Diocese’ refers to the geographical territory in which a bishopexercises oversight. The Church in Wales is divided into six dioceses each with its own cathedral in which is housed the cathedra (the bishop’s ‘chair’ or ‘throne’).
The Christian Church is divided due to different interpretations of the faith and different religious practices. The ecumenicalmovement promotes dialogue and understanding between Christians and works for visible unity.

May 22, 2020 · Llandaff Cathedral is small for a cathedral but has had a surprisingly complex building history. It is on the site of a small early medieval monastic foundation, but this would have had one or more small oratories made of timber, wattle and daub rather than an imposing stone church.
The centre of the west front, dating from 1220, is regarded as one of the most important works of medieval art in Wales. The Somerset-style north-west bell-tower was built c.1485 with money from Jasper Tudor , uncle of King Henry VII.
