Why? Obviously the people who wrote Beowulf spoke the language it was written in and lived in the region it was written in. That seems like kind of a given.
The beowulf story itself is convoluted by today's standards because of the style of it's time, usually going off on huge tangents to explain everything from the ruling family lineage to why castles are dark at night.
