First published on July 5th 1687, the Principia went on to dominate scientific thought for centuries after its publication.
Before composing his essay, unfortunately, Huxley had no direct acquaintance with Newton's unpublished papers, and accordingly had to rely on the inconsistencies and subtle distortions of the traditional account of Newton's method in the Principia.
