    There were 3 main reasons/functions why William the Conquerer and his Normans started building castles right after they had landed in England and why they even continued after the coronation of William.

    The Normans built so-called Motte and Bailey castles. These two parts of a Norman castle had different purposes so we will look at them separately. Please note that the keep in the video is made of stone. Normally these early keeps were made out of wood and later replaced by stone structures. More on that later.
