Hiro Hamada (浜田 (はまだ) 尋 (ひろ) , Hamada Hiro?) is the overall main protagonist of the Big Hero 6 franchise, as well as the leader of the Big Hero 6 organization.
Hiro is a half-Japanese, half-American boy who was raised with his older brother Tadashi in the city of San Fransokyo by their aunt Cass, following the death of their parents when Hiro was only 3 years old. Their home also served as Cass' business—a café titled Lucky Cat Café. Hiro never left San Fransokyo once, so he became accustomed to city life and knew his way around town. At some point when Hiro was still a young child, Cass got a new cat named Mochi, who Hiro grew to consider his own pet as well.
Being a born genius, Hiro was greatly advanced from a young age and surpassed all of his peers—including his own brother—on a variety of intellectual planes to the point where he found himself regularly skipping grades in order to continue his own "education." Due to this, however, Hiro had issues socializing with kids his age, so he instead formed a close relationship with his brother Tadashi, who fully understood how he felt. The brothers came up with a special set of rules that only they knew, and spent holidays together, with Tadashi taking him to haunted houses for Halloween on many occasions. Both brothers also took martial arts classes together.
By the age of 13, Hiro had graduated high school and subsequently tapped into and mastered a large mass of information and complex world concepts that most students enrolled in college were only just being introduced to. At that age, his brother Tadashi enrolled into the San Fransokyo Institute of Technology, but on the other hand, Hiro had become arrogant and over-confident about his genius and decided not to attend college himself as he felt it would be a waste of his time because he'd be taught things he already knows.
On a Christmas day, Tadashi built a Snow Machine because snowing wasn't common where they lived. Hiro watched as the machine malfunctioned and caused an avalanche inside their own home, but Tadashi kept the machine to eventually fix and give it to Hiro as a present for next Christmas.
Despite being intellectually mature, at heart, Hiro was still 14 years old. Thanks to his knowledge about the city and robotics, Hiro would soon become involved in bot-fighting as an outlet for his intellect. During this time, he also became friends with other bot-fighters such as Stan, although they were much older than him. However, this hobby eventually evolved into a darker path: Hiro started participating in illegal matches where betting was involved, and sometimes even swindled other competitors by pretending to be unskilled and naïve due to his age so that they would feel more confident and bet large sums of money, then easily defeating his opponents as they let their guard down.
Tadashi learned about this before Cass found out and became concerned for his brother, so he sewed mini-GPS systems into every one of Hiro's hoodies to keep track of him whenever he went out at night so, if the need every presented itself, he could get Hiro out of trouble.
Hiro is a carefree and free-spirited boy with intelligence and understanding far beyond his years. Because of this, he can be a bit brazen and cocky, but never to the point of arrogance. He is easily accepting of other people and doesn't seem to have much of a problem forming positive connections with those he comes into contact with.
There is a certain sincerity Hiro harbors that allows him to cohesively, effectively and firmly convey his feelings and ideas on a matter at hand to whoever is within earshot. The fullest extent of this sincerity comes out perhaps most predominantly around Tadashi. Despite their scuffles and brotherly banter, the words exchanged between them are always filled with their true and barest thoughts, concerns, insecurities, and intentions. They never pull any punches when it comes to relating to each other what they think and feel on either the current situation or the topic at hand and their bond is only stronger because of it.
Despite his cool, carefree, yet hot-blooded and bold nature, Hiro has been shown to have a much softer disposition that has not been shown willingly to anyone save for Baymax and Aunt Cass such as when he felt shy when meeting Tadashi's friends. Even so, his caring and sympathetic disposition are evident both in the way he interacts with and handles his relationships with his family and team members. He is generally always looking out for the safety and welfare of those around him and taking into consideration their individual and personal conditions before finally focusing on himself, even if he suffers as a result of it. Even when Hiro is shown to have been wronged, he takes it in starkly collected stride, taking the adequate time to handle the situation with a calm, level and yet fiercely determined and driven head.
His working ways are pretty chaotic and as a genius, he does not mind making a mess as long as he gets things done. This came into conflict with Wasabi when both had to work on a school project for Professor Granville. Though both are great friends and teammates, Hiro's attitude did not settle well with Wasabi's overly organized and perfectionist ways, which made them both even want to bail out of the project with excuses. However, they managed to work it out and the Mech Suit they built was impressive to Granville.
On rare occasions, he gives up easily when ideas don't come to his mind immediately or makes several failed attempts. He gets nervous that he might not be good enough anymore, but thanks to his friends he has been able to overcome these issues.
However, underneath this heart of gold lies a darker and more ruthless potential. On the flip side of this caring, loving, direct and to the point disposition, Hiro has maintained a very staunch no-nonsense policy when it comes to those who intentionally cause harm and misfortune to those he cares for and loves. At one point, the full force of this sentiment would come to a frightening culmination if the act was particularly heinous. In the case of such an event, Hiro for all intents and purposes would lock down on immediate retribution for said crime and it would take a certain intervention to truly calm his rage such as when Callaghan said it was Tadashi's own fault he died for nothing. This has now altogether ceased to be an issue, with Hiro perhaps becoming even more level-headed and considerate than he was before.
Hiro is a young teenager of approximately five feet tall with a lean and slender frame. He has tousled, jet-black hair, almond-shaped brown eyes, somewhat thick eyelashes and eyebrows, light skin, and a slight gap in his front teeth, along with a slight overbite.
He can be most consistently found in some combination of casual shirts, cargo capris, and Converse sneakers all likely topped off with a blue zip-up hoodie.
When geared up as a superhero, Hiro dons a battle-ready outfit showcasing indigo armor. Under this armor, he wears a black protective two-piece suit that covers most of his body down to his knees along with black knee pads and steel-toe black sneakers, both of which have red magnetic circles which allow him to link to magnetic ports on the back of Baymax. On his hands, he wears thick, forearm-reaching, black and indigo padded gauntlets that sport the same red magnetic circle on the palms.
His super-suit is slightly altered in the series: his helmet's visor is transparent in the film but was retconned to be orange-tinted in the show, his sneakers have been replaced with black steel-toe combat boots, the pockets on his belt are obsolete, and his black pants fully cover his legs. Additionally, in the series, his red shirt does not have the humanoid robot image and he does not wear an undershirt. He moreover does not zip up his hoodie in the series.
Big Hero 6
When Hiro is 14 years old, he goes to an illegal bot-fight to win easy money by giving the impression that he's an unskilled innocent teenager, bluffing all along. Unfortunately, he challenges the gangster and bot-fight champion Mr. Yama, first allowing Yama's Little Yama to defeat Hiro's own Megabot only so Yama would stake more money for a second round, then Hiro shows his real genius and effortlessly destroys Little Yama with Megabot, claiming victory. Yama quickly realizes he had been swindled and calls his henchmen to beat up Hiro, though he is immediately rescued by Tadashi, who took him away with his scooter and immediately begins chastising Hiro's actions when he finds out Hiro isn't hurt. Despite their efforts to escape from Yama, both parties along with everyone else involved with the event are caught, arrested and subsequently thrown in jail. Thanks to their Aunt Cass, Hiro and Tadashi are released that same night with Cass scolding them as the Hamadas return home. The two are able to bypass punishment, but a frustrated Tadashi scolds Hiro on his bot-fighting obsession and insists he put his intelligence to better use, recommending the San Fransokyo Institute of Technology. Hiro scoffs at the idea, jokingly noting the pointlessness of the effort and makes an attempt to join another bot fight as his ample winnings from his previous victory had been confiscated by the police. Tadashi apparently gives up and asks if he can give him a ride, "I can't stop you from going but I'm not gonna let you go on your own." but ends up taking him to the university with the reasoning that he's "gotta grab something." before they go to the fight. Relenting to his brother's wishes, Hiro meets Tadashi's closest friends — Honey Lemon (a hyperactive chemistry expert), Go Go Tomago (a sassy adrenaline junkie), Wasabi (a neurotic neat freak), and Fred (a hopeless fanboy with a love of comics and Japanese Kaiju and the school's mascot). Despite his reservations over what he had initially dubbed the "Nerd Lab," he finds himself shamelessly impressed and enthralled with the diverse projects and inventions of the quirky band of scientists. Tadashi takes Hiro to his lab where he introduces him to Baymax, an inflatable white robot, programmed to be a personal healthcare companion and created as a means to heal the sick and injured. Tadashi explains that Baymax is a healthcare nursing product meant to help people around the world. Baymax's functionality relies on a green card which houses all of Baymax's healthcare programming, which, according to Tadashi, makes Baymax who he is. Immediately after leaving the lab, the two run into the school's Head of Robotics Professor Callaghan. With his help, Tadashi finally manages to convince Hiro to enroll in the Institute, Callaghan claiming a school is a place where the boundaries of robotics are pushed, and geniuses put their brains to the test in order to shape the future. Realizing that this is the very same Callaghan who invented the base technology comprising the robot that he uses for bot fighting, his words instantly strike Hiro and after departing the school, he confesses his burning desire to join the Institute, "If I don't go to this nerd school, I'm going to lose my mind. How do I get in?" According to Tadashi, the school holds an annual convention where up-and-coming geniuses are meant to showcase new creations. Of course assuming that they haven't already applied, been accepted and enrolled, "You come up with something that blows Callaghan away, you're in." Tadashi advises Hiro to concoct a creation to do just that. Hiro runs into a creator's block as he aspires to create something specifically brand new, jaw-dropping and ground-breaking. Comically over-exaggerating his unfortunate predicament, Hiro takes a mental break of sorts to mull over his thoughts worrying, "I'm never getting in." before Tadashi tells him, "Hey, I'm not giving up on you." and reminds him to look for another angle, eventually leading to Hiro's breakthrough a bit sooner than later. Noticing something about his battle-bot, Hiro instantly gets an idea and immediately gets to business. After a period of work and planning, Hiro invents the Microbots--miniature robots capable of forming anything that comes to one's mind via the use of a telepathic headband transmitter. Confident in his creation, Hiro takes his invention and showcases them at the convention. Though nervous at first, Tadashi silently helps ease his nerves, resulting in a fantastic showcase that thoroughly impresses both Callaghan and famous tech-guru Alistair Krei. After a moment of celebration after the presentation's success, Krei comes over and offers Hiro vast wealth in exchange for ownership over the Microbots, an idea Hiro seems visibly hesitant about considering. Callaghan interferes with the offer by accusing Krei of using technology and science for selfish reasons, advising Hiro to deny the offer. Hiro thinks it over and politely does deny the offer. A frustrated Krei leaves the scene saying he thought Hiro was smarter than that while Callaghan congratulates Hiro on his success by granting him admission into the school on the spot, "I look forward to seeing you in class." In celebration, Cass offers to take Hiro, Tadashi, and their friends back to Lucky Cat Café for a free dinner. Before they leave, Tadashi and Hiro spend time talking out Hiro's recent success. Hiro expects Tadashi to say that, "I should be proud of myself because I'm finally using my gift for something important." Tadashi tells him he was going to tell him, "Your fly was down for the whole show." Hiro dismisses it as a joke, "Ha, ha, hilarious." until he looks down and sees that his fly was down, zips it back up and punches Tadashi's arm. Tadashi congratulates his brother on his success, proud to see him use his genius for bigger things in life. Hiro, getting serious, tells him he wouldn't have made it without Tadashi, "Thanks for not giving up on me." Suddenly, the school's fire alarm goes off, prompting the two to investigate. Upon arrival, they find the Showcase Hall in flames. They run into one woman fleeing the blaze who tells the boys that Professor Callaghan is still inside. Tadashi tries to go help get him out, but Hiro stops him, silently urging him to think about the situation. After a moment's consideration, Tadashi insists, "Callaghan's in there, someone has to help." Not seconds after he rushes into the building, the fire reaches its peak and the facility violently explodes, rendering Hiro, who had tried to go after his brother, unconscious and killing Tadashi (and presumably Callaghan). A funeral and memorial service are held and Hiro falls into a deep and lonely depression at the loss of his brother and best friend. As such, he remains largely secluded in his room, appreciative, but mostly unreceptive of his Aunt and friends' comforting messages. Hiro accidentally stubs his toe and his outcry of pain summons Baymax. Hiro becomes surprised telling Baymax, "I didn't know you were still active." Baymax explains that he heard the sound of distress and offers assistance. Hiro waves off his offer assuring the robot that he can deactivate, only to accidentally stumble upon one of his Microbots. Hiro is surprised to find it still active and curiously trying to reunite with the other bots. Hiro, believing that the rest of his Microbots and the transmitter were destroyed in the fire, ignores the bot's activity and dismisses it as a malfunctioning. Baymax claims that the robot wanted to go somewhere and takes Hiro's offhanded suggestion to find where to the extreme, actually leaving the premises of Hiro's room and taking to the streets. Hiro chases the wandering Baymax through the city and the two eventually find themselves in an abandoned warehouse where Baymax tells Hiro he, "found where your tiny robot wants to go." The two break in and they soon stumble upon a machine creating millions of Microbots. As Hiro investigates and ponders over the mysterious discovery, the Microbots rise and attack. Hiro and Baymax evade them and eventually encounter a dark, masked figure. The masked man pursues the duo, but they eventually escape at the last minute, immediately heading to the police station to report the attack. The two give their claims to Desk Sergeant Gerson, who finds their story to be rubbish, thus denying them lawful assistance. Just then, Baymax begins to run low on battery power, forcing Hiro to leave the station and return home to have the robot charge. After sneaking past an oblivious Aunt Cass, Baymax begins to charge and Hiro takes a breather from the exhausting day. Just then, Baymax acknowledges Tadashi's disappearance, asking his whereabouts. Hiro reveals Tadashi's unfortunate demise prompting Baymax to try to help. He downloads "a database on personal loss." and takes action by contacting the gang and giving Hiro a hug assuring him, "You will be alright. There, there." Hiro gently thanks Baymax saying the fire was an accident, but rethinks the events of the day. After the encounter with Yokai, Hiro realizes that the fire was no accident and recruits Baymax into helping him take down the masked culprit, wanting to avenge his brother's death. As such, Baymax is given a few upgrades, including a super-suit equipped with martial arts battle programming and a new chip which gives him such abilities. After his new upgrades are put to the test, the two head out to find and capture Yokai. They arrive at the warehouse, only to find it vacant. However, using the last Microbot to track him, Hiro and Baymax are led to the docks, where they find the Yokai emerging from the fog with a massive piece of technology. The two go into silent hiding until Honey, Go Go, Wasabi and Fred arrive, having answered Baymax's summons and followed the two thereafter spotting them snooping about the city. Hiro urges them to leave for their own safety before the group is attacked by Yokai. Baymax tries to battle the masked villain, only to be thrown onto the top of Wasabi's car. The gang retreats from the scene with Yokai immediately following behind them, leading into a chase throughout the city. Yokai makes several attempts to kill the team, but between Hiro's command of Baymax and Go Go's reckless driving, they manage to escape by driving off a ledge and into the bay, having Yokai believe them to be dead, prompting him to vanish once again. Baymax manages to rescue the team and bring them back to shore and Hiro suggests they needed a place to rest for the night and recover, at which point Fred welcomes them into his mansion. There, they discuss the true identity of Yokai and how to track him down and bring him to justice for his crimes against Hiro's brother. Baymax reveals that he scanned the man's body, but Go Go notes that with Baymax's scanner, it would take forever to scan every person in the city. Hiro agrees but notes that he only has to upgrade it. The team is apprehensive at first, bringing up the fact that they were all just "nerds." Hiro then doubles back, saying that in order to bring in a guy the caliber of Yokai, they would all need to be "upgraded." Reassured, the team bonds together under hero in order to capture who Hiro believes to be responsible for the fire. True to her character, Go Go was the first to vocally resonate with him, buckling down and getting ready face fear and help Hiro bring the supervillain to justice. After some scientific modifications and training, the group of friends become a superhero group bent on taking down Yokai. To do so, the team believes his mask is his source of power, "We get the mask and he can't control the bots. Game over." Baymax is the last to be upgraded and after his new super-suit is revealed, he and Hiro take a test flight for the first time throughout the city, eventually landing on one of the air balloons towering over the city and overlooking a sunset. Hiro and Baymax take the time to relax and bond for a short moment, which brings happiness to the boy. Realizing this, Baymax asks Hiro if he's satisfied with his care, as his true objective throughout their adventure is to ensure Hiro's happiness and satisfaction, claiming Hiro to be his patient. Hiro denies Baymax's suggestion and returns to the matter at hand. After scanning the city to find a match to Yokai's health information, Baymax discovers a match on an island not far from the mainland. The team heads to the area, which is revealed to be an abandoned facility. There, they find a machine in the process of restoration but are unable to uncover what it is exactly. Soon enough, their snooping leads to a room with recordings taking place in the facility. After watching, they learn that the facility originally belonged to Alistair Krei and the machine was a portal meant to enhance transportation. The test subject, a woman named Abigail, was the first to try it out, but as she did, the machine malfunctioned. Instead of calling off the procedure, Krei insisted that they move forward, resulting in a tragic accident that left Abigail lost in the portal and apparently killed by the machine's destruction. The incident results in the closure of Krei's facility and the team then comes to the conclusion that Krei is responsible for stealing the Microbots in hopes of rebuilding his portals. Just then, Yokai returns and attacks once more. A battle follows and in the process, Hiro accidentally removes the villain's kabuki mask. Yokai's true identity is then revealed to be Professor Callaghan. Callaghan confesses his crime of stealing the Microbots and reveals that he used them to escape the fire alive and unharmed. A heartbroken Hiro reveals that Tadashi died trying to save the professor, but Callaghan merely responds by blaming Tadashi for his own death. Furious, Hiro orders Baymax to kill Callaghan. Baymax denies such an action, explaining he's unable to bring harm to a human being, but Hiro, blinded by hatred and grief, removes the robot's healthcare chip, leaving only his programming of battle and destruction, thus sending him on a violent, mindless rampage in an attempt to kill the professor. Seeing this, Go Go, Fred and Wasabi try to fend off the bot and, in the mix of the chaos, Callaghan manages to escape. Luckily, Honey recovers Baymax's healthcare chip and restores the robot to his original peaceful settings. Realizing what he's done, Baymax apologizes to the team for causing harm but Hiro berates them, blaming them for Callaghan's escape. The team retorts by explaining that the plan was never to kill Callaghan, but instead, to merely apprehend him. Leaving the team on the island out of anger, Hiro and Baymax return home to fix Baymax's suit. Baymax talks to Hiro about the situation of killing Callaghan, asking if his death would appease the boy. Instead of answering, with his mind clouded by thoughts of fury, revenge, sadness and the loss of Tadashi, Hiro breaks down in tears. Baymax comforts him by showing him videos of Tadashi, which he recorded during his creation process. Tadashi's presence and loving words bring enlightenment to Hiro, who thanks Baymax for his comfort. Honey, Go Go, Fred and Wasabi soon arrive as well. Instead of being upset with Hiro, they, too, comfort the boy, he says he is sorry for scolding at them and they understand that his actions were only out of grief and his anger and grief blinded him and vow to bring Callaghan to justice and his four teammates forgive him. Before they set out, the team shows Hiro a recording they found, which reveals that Abigail was the daughter of Callaghan and the entire goal behind his villainy is to extract revenge on Alistair Krei. The next day, Alistair Krei is in the middle of an important showcase, just as Yokai arrives and captures him. Yokai reveals himself to be Callaghan, and the villainous professor subsequently reveals his plot to use the newly-recreated portal to destroy both Krei's new building and Krei himself. Alistair tries to talk sense into the villain, explaining the incident with Abigail was an accident, but Callaghan ignores him and proceeds with his plot. Just then, Hiro and the team arrives on the scene. Instead of immediate attack, Hiro tries to sympathize with the professor, explaining the fact that extracting revenge isn't the way to handle his daughter's death nor would it be anything Abigail would've approved of, but Callaghan's fury gets the better of him, and his plans proceed. Hiro and the others battle the villain, aiming for Callaghan's mask, but Callaghan soon gets the upper hand with the help from the Microbots and leaves the team members to die as his plot is set in motion. As Hiro is being pulled towards the portal, his distressed team members call to him for help, while at the same time, he sees some Microbots being sucked into a portal, giving him a new idea. Hiro then uses the words of wisdom from Tadashi to successfully guide each of his friends to safety. After being rescued by Baymax and rejoining the others, Hiro relays his new plan, instructing the team members to take out the Microbots and get them sucked into the portal to eliminate Callaghan's source of power, whilst he and Baymax take on the villain, themselves. Hiro and Baymax fly to attract Callaghan's attention, making him fire towers of Microbots in their direction. Dodging the Microbots, the two fly the point where they are almost sucked into the portal, from where Hiro orders Baymax to dive and break apart the Microbot formations to send them into the portal. Eventually, Callaghan captures the duo and prepares to make the killing strike, only to find that he has run out of the remaining available Microbots, thus rendering him powerless and vulnerable. With this revelation, Hiro and Baymax break free of their confinement and launch towards the villain. Fearfully, Callaghan prepares for his supposedly oncoming demise, but much to his shock, Hiro decides to spare his life, wanting to follow the moral code set by Baymax. Instead, Hiro and Baymax swipe the mask of Yokai and smash it into smithereens, causing Callaghan to finally (and permanently) lose control of the Microbots. With his plans foiled and power-stripped, the team apprehends Callaghan, but Baymax senses life within the portal, though the being is said to be in hyper-sleep. Hiro realizes that it must be Abigail and the young boy journeys inside to save her, along with Baymax. The two soon find Abigail, asleep in her capsule, and as they make their escape, some of the debris from the destruction of Krei Tech strikes them, causing Baymax to lose most of his armor. Hiro reaches out for Baymax, who manages to grab ahold of his hand, but they both find that the portal is soon closing. Baymax decides to use his rocket-fist to send both Hiro and Abigail to safety, and requests deactivation at Hiro's command. Realizing that this will result in the robot's permanent imprisonment within the portal, Hiro denies such a plan, not wanting to lose him. Baymax disregards his own safety to help of Hiro, reassuring his friend that he'll always be with him. Without a choice, Hiro tearfully hugs Baymax as he bids him farewell, telling the robot that he is satisfied with his care. With these words, Baymax sends Hiro and Abigail off, leaving himself trapped in the portal and eventually destroyed. After Hiro and Abigail manage to make it out of the portal, seconds before it explodes, Hiro reunites with the others and reveals Baymax's demise. Soon afterwards, the police and paramedics arrive to care for Abigail and arrest Callaghan.
Baymax Returns
Following these events the superhero team disbands after the loss of Baymax, not wanting to lose anyone else, but Hiro has made a tremendous recovery from his depression as he spends his days hanging out with Honey Lemon, Go Go, Wasabi, and Fred. Finally, he joins the San Fransokyo Institute of Technology as an official student. Before he leaves for his first day, he watches a video of Tadashi helping him ride a bicycle all by himself, and pauses the video to woefully look at Tadashi. He then goes to have breakfast with his friends while the report of the "mysterious" new superheroes is shown. Cass then gives Hiro his lunch and hugs him before letting him go to school. When he arrives, his friends show him around, but Hiro stops in front of Tadashi's old lab. Wasabi then joins his side by telling him that they all miss him. Hiro then enters the lab and looks at Tadashi's stuff, where the young genius saw Tadashi's cap and Baymax's last piece of armor: his rocket fist, reminiscing of their time together fondly as he comes across it. Within the grasp of the fist, however, Hiro discovers Baymax's original programming chip which contains both his personality and memories. He then sees a notebook with Baymax's blueprints sketched in it, so Hiro eagerly realizes he can rebuild Baymax and quickly gets into doing this. Soon, Professor Granville, the new dean of the SFIT, enters the lab and tells Hiro he is not allowed to work inside it as he first has to earn the lab through hard work, as his brother once did. Granville tells Hiro he can begin by getting to class and that his thermodynamics teacher can be harsh at times, so Hiro rushes to the classroom only to see that Granville herself is the teacher. For the following days, Hiro focuses on his classes while at the same time works on Baymax. Meanwhile, Fred attempts to convince the rest of the gang into continue their lives as superheroes, but they constantly refuse to it. Baymax's consciousness is uploaded to a computer while the exo-skeleton is being finished. Baymax advises Hiro to run some tests before activating it, but the boy is too confident and turns it on ignoring Baymax's advice. Baymax's body then starts acting erratically and jumps out of the window, escaping to the town. Granville then calls Hiro to show him his SFPD report involving bot-fights, but instead of nagging him, compliments that he is being more disciplined than she expected. Hiro however leaves nervously to follow Baymax's body, which he finds has unfortunately fallen in hands of Mr. Yama and his thugs. Yama quickly reminds him of the night he was imprisoned thanks to Hiro, and gets his men to take him to a high building and drop him off from it. Just then, Yama notices Hiro's SFIT ID, so he tells his men to stop, and instead makes a deal with Hiro to retrieve an item from the institution. Hiro calls Fred to help, and although Fred tells him that stealing is wrong, Hiro tells him that he would later steal the item back from Yama and return it, therefore "cancelling" the first steal. Hiro then hugs Granville while fake-crying to get close enough to her ID and duplicate it, and when she leaves her office, he goes inside and takes the item, which was used as a paperweight by Granville. Hiro and Fred then go to Good Luck Alley, meeting Yama at his office to get back Baymax's body. Yama however proves to be treacherous and instead locks up Hiro and Fred, keeping both the paperweight and Baymax. On the other hand, Wasabi, Honey and Go Go went to ask Hiro if he wanted to eat at Noodle Burger with them; instead finding Baymax's computer interface which told them Hiro and Fred had gone to Good Luck Alley. They then gear up and break into Yama's place, saving their friends to then be taken away by Heathcliff. Regardless, Yama reveals he managed to create an army of Baymax Clones during the time he kept Baymax. Back at the SFIT the team get upset at Hiro, but he calms them down when he shows he recovered the paperweight, then puts it back to its original place. Honey Lemon also helps to fix the window that Baymax's body destroyed. The following day, Baymax activates the fully finished Baymax, so the two rejoice in their reunion with a loving embrace, and Hiro's next step is to create a new chip that would give back his fighting abilities, but would prevent another incident of Baymax turning murderous. Before getting started, Hiro takes Baymax to Lucky Cat Café and Cass hugs Baymax, glad that he is back. Later, Fred joins Hiro when he is creating the Superhero Chip, as Fred and Hiro are the only ones who did want to continue being superheroes. Fred suggests their team be called Big Hero 6, claiming that it was the best name he could come up with and that "everyone loved it". Granville then passes by and enters the lab, finding Hiro and Fred while they hid from her, so Granville lectures Hiro into "balance" and that one wrong decision can cause a mess, telling him that he must choose whether to follow Tadashi's lead or to be like Fred. Hiro comprehends what Granville means and decides to listen to her, then starts ignoring Fred and pushing him aside when he tries to convince him to be a superhero. Fred then becomes sad that he is a "lone guardian of justice", but thinks that his friends might be right and the city doesn't have any other supervillains to stop. Right then though, Yama's army of Baymaxes begin attacking the city while Yama and a handful of clones go to the SFIT to personally get the paperweight. At Lucky Cat Café, Hiro and his friends are watching the attack. Once they see that the robots are too much for the police to handle, they suit up one more time and set out to stop the robots. However, Hiro realizes that he needs to go back to SFIT in order to build a new suit of armor for Baymax. Unaware of Yama's intentions, they find him as he infiltrates SFIT, then a clone of Baymax who was patrolling the halls attacked the real one, ripping his vinyl body and leaving his exo-skeleton exposed. Hiro defeats the clone and stresses out for a moment, but quickly realizes he can take advantage of this by making Baymax blend in with Yama's army, in order to find the object he was looking for. Though Baymax obtains the item, Yama drops a book on his head and triggers Baymax's healthcare programming, giving away his real identity as Yama takes the item from him. Hiro quickly enters the room and uses Baymax's rocket fist against Yama, causing him to drop the paperweight. The mysterious item breaks and begins emitting a light, then magnetically adheres to a Baymax clone that explodes as its energy overloads the bot. Yama escapes with the item while Hiro saves Baymax from falling down a window, and the rest of Big Hero 6 join them after they defeated the rest of the robots. Hiro has time to gear up, looking at Tadashi's cap and telling to himself that he is "gonna make this right". When the heroes reassemble, Baymax scans for Yama and finds he is near the train station. The item then burns through Yama's pocket and sticks to the incoming train which Cass was inside of. Big Hero 6 then stop the overcharged train, while Hiro and Baymax grab the item, and Hiro destroys it using his magnet gloves. Back to the ground, the team realize how many lives they saved and see that Fred was right. From that moment, they officially become the Big Hero 6, dedicating themselves to protect the city from any and all problems, thus Hiro finally puts his incredible potential to great use as Tadashi had always wanted. At another place, Obake, the man who had employed Yama to get the paperweight, watches surveillance cameras that show the new superhero team after they unknowingly set back a part of his bigger scheme.
Season 1
During the first season of Big Hero 6: The Series, Hiro balances his life as a new superhero with his student and civilian life. In "Issue 188", he is introduced to Karmi by Professor Granville, who intended to make Karmi become more social, albeit disguising this as "help" for Hiro. At the same time, Hiro thinks Karmi may have discovered his secret identity when she is drawing him in his superhero suit, but then Karmi is shown naïve of this as she believes they are two different people. Big Hero 6 fight the supervillain duo High Voltage, subsequently arresting them. Finally, Fred tells Hiro that Karmi does not recognize him because "people only see what they want to see", and even though Hiro attempts to be friendlier to Karmi, they instead develop a rivalry. Hiro and the team also see the origin of new supervillain Globby, and eventually, Fred reveals to them that his father was a superhero decades before, after Baron Von Steamer, an old enemy of Mr. Frederickson, crashes an event dedicated to Fred and kidnaps Wasabi, mistaking him for the former. They also confront the ninja thief Momakase after she steals a valuable item from Krei Tech and, coincidentally, faces Aunt Cass in an underground cooking competition. In "Muirahara Woods", Hiro and Fred become curious about Go Go's activities when she decides to hang out on her own. Both end up lost at Muirahara Woods along with Baymax after spying on Go Go and learning that she goes there to be alone and draw birds. Since Hiro had never left San Fransokyo before, he didn't know how to survive around nature and loses Baymax when all technological devices mysteriously start malfunctioning in the forest. Hiro and Fred are saved from a bear by a hermit man named Ned Ludd, who Fred recognizes as Ned once was a real estate developer. Hiro sees that Ned is keeping a meteorite at his treehouse and figures that the rock is what disrupts their tech. Soon, Ned helps them find Baymax before night falls, but after seeing that Baymax is a robot, Ned wanted to get rid of him because he had grown to hate all technology himself. The rest of the team go find Hiro, Baymax and Fred after learning that they went to spy on Go Go despite their objections. They save Baymax from Ned by setting a trap for him, but also heal him from an arm injury to prove that not all technology is bad. Ending in neutral terms, Ned lets the six go but still doesn't trust Baymax. By "Failure Mode", Obake continues setting his plan in motion as he allies with Globby to steal a piece of artwork from the San Fransokyo Museum of Art. Big Hero 6 easily win against Globby and come to consider him a sub-par villain. Meanwhile, Hiro becomes too overconfident about his own genius when he leaves an SFIT project for the last minute, believing there's no way he'll fail. He is proven wrong when the project backfires, and Karmi ridicules him for it by taking embarrassing pictures of his failure. After multiple failed attempts, Hiro tells Professor Granville that he gives up, but Granville encourages him to keep trying. On the other hand, Globby uses newfound abilities to defeat Big Hero 6, who underestimated him due to his previous failures. Finally succeeding in stealing the art piece he takes it to Obake, who reveals he was not interested in the art itself, but a sheet of blueprints hidden within the piece. Back at SFIT, Hiro puts more dedication into his project and Granville finally approves of it, with Hiro finally getting payback on Karmi by taking a picture of her while she has a shocked face since she believed Hiro would fail again. Eventually, Hiro started finding it harder to be a superhero due to his aunt Cass coming close to discovering his secret on different occasions, so he tries to get her a date so that she'd have something to be distracted with. Cass however takes an interest in Alistair Krei, which makes Hiro frustrated and upset because he doesn't like Krei, especially as he recently blackmailed Big Hero 6 into fixing his Buddy Guard robots or he'd expose their real identities. While the team gets to work on it, Hiro tries to ruin Cass and Krei's date, but Mel Meyer gets in the way when he disguises himself as Krei to steal back his technology from Krei after they had a disagreement, so Hiro has to ally with Krei to stop Mel. In the end, Hiro decides to not meddle with Cass' romantic life, though she also decided she didn't want to date anybody else. Obake then comes up with a double-cross plan, anonymously selling Krei a "high-tech chip" and at the same time hiring the mercenary trio Mad Jacks to steal the same chip from him, in order to make Krei paranoid enough so he would use the chip personally instead of handing it to his company's team. While on night patrol, Hiro, Fred and Baymax manage to save Krei from the Mad Jacks, but Krei keeps the chip a secret from the heroes. Hiro also becomes ill after the encounter as he was thrown to the bay during the battle. Despite being told to stay in bed, Hiro goes out on his own to take on the Jacks after they abduct Krei and steal his chip, but he ends up in a worse condition with his leg injured. Cass becomes suspicious, but Hiro claims he got hurt while playing a videogame. Meanwhile, Obake takes an interest in Hiro due to his tenacity and investigates more about him. Hiro is upset that he is forced to stay in bed and can't help the team on the field, so he builds a robot decoy to catch up with his friends remotely. After retrieving Krei's chip from the Mad Jacks and returning it to Krei, Obake's prediction comes true as Krei decides he can't trust his own team following all the trouble he went through just to obtain the chip and installs it in his personal computer to see what's inside it. Krei becomes angry that the drive was empty all along, but on the other hand, Obake gained access to all of Krei's files, including Hiro's real identity. Subsequently, Obake reprograms Noodle Burger Boy when he learns the robot was manufactured by Krei Tech, intending to use him to discover the alter-egos of the rest of the team. Hiro also comes into conflict to Wasabi and his neat ways of working, but manage to work it out and become closer friends in the end. Unaware of Obake's ongoing scheme, the team continue to face other menaces: Mr. Sparkles becomes jealous of Mochi and threatens to hurt the cat, so Hiro creates a robot named Skymax to save him, and Yama also comes back with a new robot called Mega Yama. Hiro then meets Trevor Trengrove and Wendy Wower, two of Granville's former students who, much to Hiro's surprise, reveal that Granville has been a teacher for longer than Hiro had thought. Obake soon begins to test Hiro's intelligence, beginning by sending out Globby to make him feel useless, so Hiro decides to upgrade himself with super-strength to be less dependent on Baymax. Fred inadvertently causes a new danger to the city when he orders a gigantic robot Kentucky Kaiju and Noodle Burger Boy hacks into it, causing it to attack the city. With the advice of Mr. Frederickson, Hiro realizes he does not need to enhance himself and only needs to find his true inner strength, then uses his intelligence to stop the kaiju. Upon its destruction, Hiro finds a CPU Robot and starts to discern that someone else must be behind Globby and Noodle Burger Boy's attacks. Big Hero 6 then come face-to-face with Obake in "Rivalry Weak" when Big Hero 6 help retrieve an important book which Obake stole from Honey Lemon. They meet him at a warehouse, but Obake remains unconcerned and traps them to further test their abilities and intelligence. When the team "pass" Obake's test, he returns the book and disappears. Karmi's obsession with Big Hero 6, who she still is unaware are her classmates, grows and she starts making fan-fiction making Hiro (who she dubbed Captain Cutie) her lover. Obake also frees Momakase from prison following her previous encounter with the heroes and shows her his entire research on Big Hero 6, so she joins forces with Obake as well to get revenge on them. Hiro is annoyed by Karmi's stories, but cannot say a word as he would reveal his secret. On the other hand, Momakase kidnaps Karmi as she believes that Karmi is Hiro's actual girlfriend after having read her fan-fictions. Karmi is taken to Akuma Island, the very place Big Hero 6 first encountered Callaghan, as it was about to be demolished. When Hiro and the team get out, Karmi hugs Hiro and thanks him, so Hiro decides not to be mean and allows her to continue writing her stories since they had also helped the team in escaping and inspired them to obtain new abilities such as Baymax's Overdrive Mode. Regardless, Hiro is still uneasy about being depicted as Karmi's lover. Globby also returns to the streets as a criminal, but Big Hero 6 is busy at class so Fred is the only one available to attempt stopping him. Instead, Fred causes a mess while chasing Globby, so Hiro comes up with Mini-Max: a robot resembling Baymax that would watch over Fred. Fred thinks of Mini-Max as his companion, and together they face Globby again. However, since Granville forbid Hiro from using the SFIT's lab after hours to program Mini-Max's chip, Hiro becomes suspecting of her and follows her to Good Luck Alley, narrowly escaping from Yama who he unexpectedly met. Hiro's distrust to Granville becomes bigger due to her visit to the dangerous place, so he goes to visit the imprisoned Robert Callaghan to ask him about Granville. Callaghan tells Hiro that in the past, there was an incident involved Granville that made her quit her job. Hiro thanks Callaghan and immediately walks away, but Callaghan stops the boy to thank him about having saved Abigail and says he is sorry about what happened to Tadashi. Hiro becomes sorrowful to hear him say this and tells Callaghan that forgiving him would be what Tadashi wanted—hoping that, someday, he will be able to. He then goes to the SFIT to keep spying on Granville, but is caught by her and the new Security System Robots. Granville shows Hiro the robots' CPU and tells him she had created them due to the rising wave of crime in San Fransokyo. Out of sudden, the robots turn against Hiro and Granville, so they go hide while help arrives. While waiting, Hiro questions Granville about her past and why she lied about being a recent SFIT teacher, so she reveals that the last time she allowed a student to use the lab after hours, he started a dangerous experiment and Granville felt guilty from it, leaving the SFIT due to it. Fred and Mini-Max get to the SFIT to beat the robots, because everyone else reasoned that Granville would easily discover their identities. Afterwards, Hiro talks with Granville and promises he would not end up like her student. Unknown to both, it was Obake who had hacked the Security System, and was listening to Granville and Hiro talk about "the student"—who turned out was him. While Obake continues his plan in silence, Fred reveals his identity to his rival Richardson Mole, who figures out the rest of Big Hero 6's identities and threatens to reveal it to everyone unless he can join the team as well. Hiro agrees with no other choice and gives him a super-suit that was similar to Fred's, then the brand-new Big Hero 7 set off to stop High Voltage once more. After defeating the villains, Richardson Mole is electrocuted and causes memory loss on him, thus he stops being a menace to Big Hero 6 as he forgets their identities. In "Big Problem", a bio-tech genius called Liv Amara visits SFIT to meet Hiro and Baymax, although Liv loses interest in both far too quickly when Hiro reveals he hadn't created Baymax. Instead, Liv befriends Karmi, causing Hiro to become jealous of her. Big Hero 6 also face Orso Knox, a man who mysteriously mutated into a beast, and after Karmi helps to incapacitate the monster Liv offers to try finding a cure for Knox at her company. Hiro then becomes more intrigued in Obake's plan, but Wasabi's birthday was coming up so the team decide to recover his car from the bottom of the bay. At the same time, Baron Von Steamer returns to take revenge against Fred's father—formerly a superhero called Boss Awesome. In this occasion, Obake hacks Big Hero 6's communicators to help them into stopping Steamer because Steamer's plan would interfere with his own, and so the team incarcerate Von Steamer while at the same time they ponder why Obake would aid them. In "The Bot-Fighter", Hiro's old ambitions would return when several heists involving battle bots were happening in San Fransokyo and some of Hiro's former bot-fighter friends were being framed for the crimes. Hiro thinks he should go undercover at bot fights to inquire about this, but during his visit at a competition, he meets Trina. Hiro is being dragged back to the illegal bot-fights thanks to Trina, even being arrested once more. When Cass shows concern about this and grounds Hiro, he decides to go back only once more and search for evidence at Yama's office, who they believed was responsible. Upon finding out that Trina was actually behind the attacks, Hiro attempts to convince her from getting out of it and go with Big Hero 6 instead. Nevertheless, Trina refuses and activates a robot that attacks Big Hero 6 while she escapes. With Megabot's help, Hiro destroys Trina's bot and thanks his friends for having helped him, claiming that if it wasn't for them and Tadashi he might have ended up like Trina. It is then revealed that Trina is an android controlled by Obake, who used her to attempt having the boy join him. Seeing how important Tadashi was to Hiro, Obake's next step is to try manipulating Hiro with the memory of his deceased brother. Obake implants digital imaging contact lenses into the human members of Big Hero 6 when they go to a haunted house attraction, causing Go Go, Wasabi, Fred and Honey Lemon to see their biggest fears, while Hiro began seeing Tadashi alive and walking around town. He is distracted by this while fighting Noodle Burger Boy and thereby allowing the robot to escape. When Noodle Burger Boy damages Baymax, Hiro starts repairing him at his garage but sees Tadashi again, thus follows him back to the haunted house which he visited earlier with his friends. In the house, Hiro and Tadashi start talking about what has happened since Tadashi's death, and then he tells Hiro to stop holding his genius back and to not fix Baymax anymore. Hiro however proves to be too smart as he knows that isn't something Tadashi would say, so he removes the lenses from his eyes and sees that Tadashi was never there. The rest of the team are affected by the lenses as well, and become too distracted by their fears that Noodle Burger Boy steals an Hyperconducting Magnet from the SFIT for Obake without them intervening. Hiro is discouraged by this, but wonders how Obake could know so much about Tadashi. It is shown that Obake had also stolen some of Tadashi's test videos from when he was building Baymax, and with the hyperconducting magnet in his hands, he was closer to the final step of his plan.
Family
•Tadashi Hamada - Tadashi is Hiro's older brother and the most important person in Hiro's life. Since their parents died before Hiro was old enough to remember them, Tadashi was the only person Hiro looked to for guidance and advice and was practically raised by him and their aunt. However, since Hiro had issues making friends his age due to his advanced intellect, Tadashi was his best and only friend as he understood Hiro better than anyone, and both even came up with a set of rules that only the two of them knew. Tadashi was the one to interest Hiro in robotics, and both brothers balanced each other well, as Hiro is more creative with his inventions while Tadashi was more practical and abider to the rules. Following Tadashi's death, Hiro fell into a depression that he managed to overcome thanks to Tadashi's friends and Baymax. Hiro then decided to honor his brother by following Tadashi's dream to help everyone in need by founding the superhero team Big Hero 6 with his friends. •Aunt Cass - Cass is the aunt of Hiro and Tadashi, who became their legal guardian following the death of the kids' parents. She is very supportive and proud of Hiro's abilities, and although Hiro knows how much Cass loves him and tries her best to continue raising him, he tends to keep many secrets from her, primarily because he knows how easily she can stress out—such as his double-life as a superhero because he knows Cass would disapprove of it due to the risks it implies, especially considering Tadashi's death. Regardless, Cass continues to teach Hiro valuable life lessons whenever she can, such as teaching him how to move on with life, getting his first (legal) job, and making new friends. Hiro and Cass also spend time together as a family by watching movies and doing other activities on certain occasions when Cass isn't busy with work and Hiro is free from schoolwork—though this is often interrupted due to his secret life with Big Hero 6. •Baymax - Their relationship started out basic: Hiro was impressed when Tadashi first introduced Baymax to him, though Hiro only saw the robot as his brother's school project and nothing more. Yet when Hiro and Baymax reunited, he was less than thrilled as Baymax served as a reminder of Tadashi's death. However, because Hiro unintentionally summoned Baymax when the former expressed pain, the robot viewed Hiro as his patient, becoming solely devoted to him and unable to dismiss himself until the boy was satisfied with his care, vocally expressing that fact. This led Baymax to carry out every small order given by Hiro, no matter how literal or sarcastic, in hopes of improving the boy's health, as a result of his programming. As time went on, Baymax's treatment towards Hiro began to change: The robot began learning and understanding the basics of human emotion, and a personal bond with Hiro began to form. His dedication towards his "patient" was no longer due to programming alone, but also because of a mutual love. In turn, Hiro grew to care for Baymax, who served as his ultimate form of comfort, a loving reminder of Tadashi and a nurturing companion. This is powerfully showcased when the duo found themselves trapped within Yokai's portal while trying to save Abigail Callaghan. While Baymax was willing to sacrifice himself, Hiro strongly refused, as he didn't have the strength to lose him like he lost Tadashi. Nevertheless, Hiro fought through his emotions using Baymax's lesson of overcoming loss, but not forgetting, allowing him to bid farewell to his companion, in addition to expressing his love for the first time through a hug. Following these events and Baymax's eventual revival, the duo remains as close as ever, forming a brotherly relationship and spending their days beside one another through all events, including their mission to protect the world in Tadashi's honor.
Friends
•Fred - The two of them were initially not close friends, but since the formation of Big Hero 6, they grew to become best friends: Fred was the most excited about becoming a real superhero due to his love of fictional superheroes and fantasy in general. This clicked with Hiro as he was also a fan of these things (though to a smaller degree), and after arresting Robert Callaghan and rebuilding Baymax, Hiro and Fred were the only ones who were fully committed to continuing being superheroes when the rest of their teammates initially refused. Knowing that Fred is the most laid-back and reckless of the team, Hiro constantly turns to him whenever he does things that the rest could disapprove of, but because of this both also get into trouble constantly, and in the end, it is their friends that get them out of it. Eventually, Fred and Hiro also started to spend more time together by playing videogames, watching films, and sharing other of their mutual interests. •Go Go Tomago - Go Go is arguably the closest friend to the boy; unlike Fred, she is mature and more strict about the actions that Hiro takes—leading her to take on the role of a protective older sibling figure to him. Even when Hiro had trouble working with Wasabi, Go Go was the one who made them realize both were in the wrong trying to blame each other, and ordered them to work things out because they were still friends despite their differences, thus finally achieving this thanks to her. Yet, she knows when to cut Hiro some slack and is willing to accept his unorthodox methods if things work out. •Wasabi - Wasabi often watches out for Hiro's health and physical well-being, but his overly-neat and perfectionist attitude also clashed with Hiro's more chaotic way of working, causing both friends to have problems at some point. After working things out, Wasabi and Hiro became closer friends and respected each other's differences. •Honey Lemon - Tadashi had told Honey Lemon about Hiro before the two formally met. When Tadashi finally introduced Hiro to all his friends, Honey instantly let Hiro know how Tadashi had already told her a lot about him and happily showed the boy her chemistry projects. After the formation of Big Hero 6, she served as an enthusiastic supporter due to her positive attitude and keeps a good friendship with him. She is usually the first one to notice Hiro's emotions, such as his former jealousy towards Karmi, and when Hiro's feelings towards Karmi started to change, Honey Lemon was also the first one to notice and even cheered the fact they could potentially become a couple. •Alistair Krei - The two had a basic relationship and became good acquaintances by the end of the film. Hiro first met Krei at the convention where he was showing off his Microbots and Krei immediately took an interest, hoping to buy the Microbots. However, Callaghan warned Hiro that Krei was known to cut corners and subtly manipulated Hiro to refuse. Krei was clearly disappointed. Later when Fred assumes that Krei was Yokai, Hiro dismissed it, saying that he's too high profile, possibly implying that he is highly respectful of Krei's public image. When Hiro went to an abandoned Krei lab to track down Yokai, he initially grew to believe Krei was Yokai but was proven wrong after taking Yokai's mask and learning it was Callaghan. He also learned that Krei's teleportation experiment resulted in an accident that presumably killed Abigail which eventually turned Callaghan into Yokai. Despite finding this out, Hiro didn't seem to hold a grudge against Krei for indirectly creating Yokai as he tried his best to protect him from the masked villain. This could be because he knew it was an accident or because he wanted to stop Yokai's plan for vengeance. Krei was ecstatic when the Big Hero 6 team came to rescue him and even openly stated his love of Baymax, apparently growing a true liking for the team following these events. After stopping Yokai, Hiro finds the portal still on, "We have to shut it down." Krei tells him they can't, "The containment field is failing, the portal is going to tear itself apart. When Hiro goes to save Abigail after Baymax confirms she's alive, Krei objects, likely showing concern for the boy's safety. However, Hiro assures him by telling him the same words that Tadashi had told him "Someone has to help." Krei seems to have learned his lesson and even built a showcase hall in Tadashi's honor, possibly as a way to make amends since he indirectly created Yokai and therefore was linked to Tadashi's death. Hiro accepted the honor on behalf of his late brother. Their relationship became more complicated when Krei learned their true identities and began using Big Hero 6 for his own goals, even getting to threatening them if they didn't help him. Hiro also started disliking Krei more when he went on a date with Aunt Cass, afraid they'd actually fall in love and Krei would become his uncle. Because of this, Hiro tried to ruin their date, but in the end Cass also learned about Krei's selfish attitude and held no interest in him anymore, much to Hiro's relief. •Professor Granville - Hiro is Granville's protégé, although their relationship started off difficult because Granville was strict about trying to correct Hiro's chaotic ways, forcing him to befriend Karmi, and inadvertently trying to limit his genius out of fear he could end up like her former student Bob Aken. It turned even more complicated when Hiro discovered that Granville was keeping her past a secret from him for reasons unknown to him at the time. Soon, things became easier between them after Granville opened up to Hiro in order to gain his trust, revealing that she simply didn't want to repeat her past mistakes with him. It was then that Hiro slowly started to mature, seeing that Granville wasn't as strict or bad as he initially believed whilst also learning invaluable lessons from her. •Karmi - Hiro's classmate and rival, he was both discouraged and often put out by Karmi's stuck-up attitude. Although both of them are sharing the spotlight as SFIT's youngest student with her held little importance to him, he often tried to get on Karmi's good side in a few episodes, but eventually played along with the civilian rivalry with little care. Also, he is embarrassed at the fact that though she hates his civilian form, she has a crush on his superhero alter-ego, not being able to distinguish the similarities between the two. However, their relationship has been shown to hint at friendly feelings, as shown in "Issue 188", where Hiro says that they have a lot in common, and that they could even be friends. Baymax then makes the situation awkward by drawing up a pubertic analysis explaining the connection between them. The hint that the two may not see each other as complete rival is demonstrated again in "Small Hiro One", where Hiro notices that Karmi is locked outside of Trengrove's class, and he apologizes for her misfortune, receiving the first kind gesture from her; a small smile that appears to comfort her. Once again, their relationship appears to ascend in "Fan Friction", where Karmi is kidnapped by Momakase, and he comes to her rescue in his superhero form. The two share a friendly moment later on, where Karmi hugs "Captain Cutie" Hiro out of joy, and he appears to accept the gesture. Hiro became jealous of Karmi when she impressed Liv Armara with her extradermal nanoreceptors because he told Liv that he did not create Baymax but Tadashi did and he also failed to impress Liv with the big thermometer that he build for his bio-tech project and he has been keeping tabs of him and Karmi. According to Hiro, Karmi has negative accomplishments because everything that she does is the worst. Once Karmi returns to San Fransokyo in "Big Chibi 6", Hiro mentions that he is glad she is doing okay. During a battle, Hiro tells Karmi that he trusts her, letting her defeat Hardlight with her new invention inspired by his skill in programming. Afterwards, they share an awkward moment in which they subconsciously touch each other while speaking, and then almost lean in for a kiss, it seems. However, Karmi pulls away (Hiro is clearly dejected), saying that she no longer has a crush on his superhero alter-ego, but instead likes someone else, hinted to be Hiro. •Yokai - Being a world-renowned scientist and personal mentor of Tadashi, Hiro initially looked up to Professor Callaghan, showing great respect and admiration towards him. Impressed by Hiro's knowledge, Callaghan was able to slyly convince the boy genius to give up bot-fighting to join the Institute to "challenge himself." It is possible he did this knowing of Hiro's intelligence and wanted him to apply to the school in hopes of stealing one of his inventions (though this is up for debate). Hiro impressed Callaghan at the convention with his Microbots and Callaghan warned him against accepting Krei's offer, manipulating him to say no. When Callaghan was "trapped" in the burning building, Tadashi went in to save him, losing his life in the process. When Hiro discovered Callaghan had started the fire to steal the Microbots and refused to save Tadashi (showing no concern for Tadashi's life or the fact he tried to save him) Hiro was willing to kill the professor as revenge and was only stopped by his team's intervention. However, after Baymax calms him down, he realized his beloved brother wanted to help people, not hurt them, thus realizing he needed to bring Callaghan to justice without harm. Hiro soon learned from his teammates that Callaghan has suffered the loss of his daughter Abigail (thanks to Krei's misuse of the portal technology that led to her apparent death) and that Callaghan only stole the microbots as part of his true plan to get revenge on Krei. When Hiro confronted Callaghan once again, he tried to reason with him, admitting that he does feel sorry for him and understands the pain of loss and wanted to give the same support his teammates provided him with. However, a bitter Callaghan, while he did show a hint of regret, refused to back down and battled the boy genius, in hopes of killing him. After destroying the Microbots, thus leaving Callaghan powerless, Hiro made the ultimate decision to spare the former professor's life, having set aside his thirst for vengeance in exchange for the moral codes of Tadashi and Baymax. Not only that, he also made the choice to risk his own life to successfully save Callaghan's daughter, after discovering she was still alive within the portal. Though Callaghan showed no forward gratitude towards the hero, he met his defeat through imprisonment, and presumably permanent separation from his only loved one, finally receiving punishment for all the damage he's done, as well as granting Hiro closure. However, Callaghan's expression at the end implies that he shows remorse for what he had done, ultimately realizing that what Hiro said is right about the consequences of getting revenge. Regardless, in the series, when Hiro visits Callaghan in prison to get information about Professor Granville for a case he was working on, Callaghan finally gets to tell him, "What happened to Tadashi because of me, I know it's not enough, but I'm sorry." Hiro reveals that he has not forgiven him but hopes that someday he will be able to. The emotional core of Big Hero 6 is driven by four key characters, their arcs, and the relationships they share with one another, being Hiro, Tadashi, Baymax, and Callaghan. As such, Callaghan serves as an omen of what Hiro would have become if he allowed his pain to consume him. However, unlike Callaghan, Hiro has friends and family who supported him through the ordeal and reminded him justice, not vengeance, is the answer. This ultimately classified Callaghan as a villain and Hiro as a hero. •Obake - Hiro and Obake are very much alike. Both are scientific geniuses ahead of their time with great potential. However, their ambitions to achieve success leads them to pushing the limits. When Obake first heard about Hiro, he began to develop an interest in him. Impressed by his intellect, he wanted Hiro to join his side and make him his student once his plan to rebuild San Fransokyo was complete. •Trina -
