At the close of 1899, the American Bell Telephone Company was acquired, for business purposes, by its own subsidiary, the American Telephone & Telegraph Company (AT&T), which then became the head of the monolithic and monopolistic Bell System.
Ameritech was created as a holding company that owned five former Bell System companies in the Midwest. Under its umbrella were: Illinois Bell Telephone Company; Indiana Bell Telephone Company, Inc. Michigan Bell Telephone Company; Ohio Bell Telephone Company; Wisconsin Bell, Inc.
Use of the Bell System name initially referred to those early telephone franchises and eventually comprised all telephone companies owned by American Telephone & Telegraph, referred to internally as associated companies, regional holding companies, or later Bell operating companies (BOCs).
The Illinois Bell Telephone Company is a Bell System internet and telephone telecommunications group in the Midwestern state of Illinois. The network does business as AT&T Illinois under AT&T Teleholdings (which was once Ameritech). [1] It was established in 1920.
The Midwest regional Bell operating companies (BOCs), including Illinois Bell, Indiana Bell, Michigan Bell, Ohio Bell, and Wisconsin Bell, were assigned to the RHC American Information Technologies Corporation, called Ameritech for short.
