TIL about the Dutch TV personality Wendy van Dijk, best known for portraying bumbling Japanese journalist Ushi Hirosaki, who has mock-interviewed Adele, Donny Osmond and Lionel Richie (among others). Her portrayal raised questions of racism (and accusations of yellowface).
Van Dijk first appeared as Ushi in 1999, in Ushi en Van Dijk, a program that aired on the Dutch television channel SBS 6. While appearing as Ushi, the actress puts on makeup, glasses, wears a "buckteeth" dental appliance and conceals her blonde hair under a dark wig.
The character Ushi Hirosaki is a Japanese journalist, who sets out with her right hand (played by the Japanese-Dutch actor Hiromi Tojo) to fool unsuspecting (inter)national celebrities. In the role of Ushi, Van Dijk conducts interviews with her victims, in which she asks bizarre questions.
