May 10, 2023 · Where was LOST filmed – a breakdown of filming locations. Oahu, Hawaii. The show’s first episode sets the scene for the series, and the plane crash and subsequent fallout were all filmed on the Hawaiian island of Oahu. Most of the island scenes of this episode were filmed on Mokuke’ia Beach.
- Papailoa Beach. After leaving the site of the plane crash, the islanders set up a beach camp, erecting makeshift shelters using whatever supplies they have been able to scavenge from the wreckage.
- Camp Erdman. After discovering that the survivors we’d been rooting for weren’t alone on the island, we were introduced to the Others’ Camp. In season 3 it is home to Ben and his followers, in season 5 (and in the dated film reels found in the hatch) it is the headquarters of the Dharma Initiative and home to the workers in the 1970s, including Kate and Sawyer when they travel back in time.
- Kualoa Ranch and the Ka’a’awa Valley. Home to so many iconic locations, not just in Lost, but a multitude of other films and television series have been filmed in the Ka’a’awa Valley too.
- The Banyan Tree. Situated in Kawela Bay (Kahuku), the massive banyan tree is truly breathtaking to behold. It provided the stage for one of the show’s early shockers, with the dark jungle backdrop providing the perfect place for the mysterious Ethan to break our hearts by trying to dispose of lovable rogue Charlie.
- Crash Site of Oceanic Flight 815. When we first encountered our group of 48 crash survivors, they are gathered around the wreckage of Oceanic Flight 815 which rests on the beach of an island somewhere between Sydney, Australia, and Los Angeles, California.
- Exploring the Valley of Lost. Numerous scenes in Lost were filmed in the Ka'a'awa Valley on Oahu's Windward Coast. This is also the location where in Episode 3, Sayid, Charlie, Kate, Shannon, Boone, and Sawyer make camp for the night when they return from hearing the taped broadcast of the French woman.
- Home of the Monster. While Jack, Kate, and Charlie explore the valley, back on the beach the survivor's huddle under the plane wreckage in a heavy rainstorm.
- Fleeing in the Rainforest. Having found the plane's cockpit, Jack, Kate, and Charlie watched as the pilot is sucked from the plane by the "monster," Jack, Kate, and Charlie flee into the jungle as they try to make their way back to the beach.
Lost was filmed on Panavision 35 mm cameras almost entirely on the Hawaiian island of Oahu given the easily accessible, wide diversity of filming locations. The original island scenes for the pilot were filmed at Mokulē'ia Beach, near the northwest tip of the island.
