St Mary’s School was established in 1872 in Paddington, then a relatively wealthy area of London, by the Anglican Foundation of The Sister of the Community of St. Mary the Virgin, Wantage. It was one of the earliest establishments to reflect changing Victorian attitudes to the education of women.
In 1860, they founded St. Mary’s as a school for girls in the Raikes Hall building located in Raikes Parade, Blackpool (now a pub called Raikes Hall). The school quickly became a success, and in 1870, it moved to the Layton Hill site, where the sisters had already acquired property for their expanding mission.
The Institute which Mary Ward founded continued its work in education in the following centuries. In 1885 Mother M Joseph Edwards opened a House in Ascot, named after Our Lady of the Snows, a name of which Mary Ward was particularly fond. St Mary’s School opened with just 19 pupils under the Headship of Sister Veronica Lund (1885-91).

Students can board from Year 5, and the majority who do come from overseas. The school has one boarding house, Mary Ward House, which is within walking distance of the three schools. There are around 90+ places available for Years 5-13 boarders, and families are advised to apply early as spaces are limited.
