May 18, 2018 · Albertsons is buying the Thrifty ice cream brand — a cult-favorite treat born in L.A. — by taking over Rite Aid. It plans to keep Thrifty alive and sell the ice cream in its grocery stores.
Thrifty ice cream is sold exclusively at Rite Aid stores, so you can find it in the freezer section of your nearest location. Some independent ice cream shops may also carry Thrifty ice cream, but Rite Aid stores are the primary retailer.

Made with "Real California Milk," Thrifty Ice Cream has built an extremely devoted fan base since the award-winning brand launched in 1940, when the first production plant opened in Hollywood. In 1976, the plant relocated to El Monte, Calif., where the now 55,560-square-foot facility remains.
