James Edward Oglethorpe was born on December 22, 1696, in London, England; he was the tenth and last child of Eleanor and Theophilus Oglethorpe. Though frequently in London, the Oglethorpes maintained a large family estate in Godalming, a small Surrey town near London.
James Edward Oglethorpe (born December 22, 1696, London, England—died June 30/July 1, 1785, Cranham Hall, Essex, England) was an English army officer, philanthropist, and founder of the British colony of Georgia in America. Educated at the University of Oxford, he entered the army in 1712 and joined the Austrian army fighting the Turks in 1717.

Just days later, Oglethorpe fell ill and on June 30, 1785, he died peacefully at the age of 88. He was buried under the chancel of All Saints’ Parish Church in Cranham.
