   • Ashton village lies on its northern bank; on the same side are Stubshaw Cross, Heybridge, Brynn, Whitley Green, and Brocksteads. The southern side of the brook contains Garswood, with Seneley Green, Leyland Green, and Downall Green. The population in 1901 was 18,687. The place-names Soughers lane, Skitter farm, and Cramberley occur in 1825.

   How did Ashton get its name?

   • The name Ashton is believed to originate from 'settlement (ton) near ash trees'. The 'lyne' element may be a corruption of 'lime' - the area north of Ashton was once called 'Lyme' with the town then becoming Ashton under Lyme (recorded as Ashton sub Lima in 1422). By the 19th century the name had changed to Ashton under Lyne.
