NY 22 runs north through Westchester, taking on a number of different names throughout its length. North of White Plains, NY 22 runs parallel to I-684. I-684 has its northern terminus at NY 22 in Brewster in Putnam County.
As NY 22 bends westward after leaving Whitehall, it rounds the north end of the ridge to the west, offering views into Vermont. Once again the Vermont state line is very near NY 22, but now it is separated from New York by water instead of land.
West of Whitehall, NY 22 crosses South Bay, one of the headpoints of Lake Champlain (the other, so-called East Bay, is indistinguishable from a small river). It then climbs, dips, and twists over a steep but narrow range of mountains, the sole natural separation between Lakes George and Champlain.

NY 22 follows US 6 and US 202 into Westchester County. Just south of the Westchester-Putnam county line, NY 22 splits off from US 202 and runs south as a two-lane undivided road. The Croton Falls railroad station is to the right along this stretch.
