As Small Heath, they played in the Football Alliance before becoming founder members and first champions of the Football League Second Division. The most successful period in their history was in the 1950s and early 1960s.
Birmingham City Football Club, an English association football club based in Birmingham, was founded as Small Heath Alliance in September 1875, and from 1877 played home games at Muntz Street.
Small Heath started their football league experience in the new founded The Combination, which included teams in the Midland and the North. The Combination was cancelled after that season and the Birmingham club would participate in the new founded Football Alliance the following season.
Before settling for Birmingham City, three other names were used. The first of these was Small Heath Alliance, then just Small Heath. Birmingham followed that, and then finally Birmingham City. The clubs official magazine dated 25/3/72, first heralded the arrival of the then-new badge.
After brief spells in the Bordesley Green and Sparkbrook areas of the city, the club settled into the Muntz Street Stadium in Small Heath, where they would play from 1877 to 1906. Blues moved into their current ground of St. Andrews, also in Small Heath, in that same year and still play there today.
