The town lies at the interior end of the bay, and originally was settled on a flat strip of land between the fjord and Lemvig Lake (Danish: Lemvig Sø), surrounded to the east and west by steep hills. Gradually, the town has expanded and spread up the sides of the valley.

I 1879 fik Lemvig forbindelse til jernbanestrækningen Ringkøbing-Holstebro, og i 1899 åbnede forbindelsen til Harboøre. I slutningen af århundredet var der kommet nogen industri til byen med en tobaksfabrik, et teglværk og en dampmølle, og indbyggertallet var steget til omkring 3.200 i 1901.
Lemvig fik sin første byplan i 1920, sin første store etageejendom i 1935 og sin første boligforening i 1942. Erhvervslivet fulgte snart efter med oprettelsen af Lemvig Erhvervsråd for at gøre Lemvig attraktiv for handel og industri. I 1960’erne blev der opført to nye skoler.
