Lazarus Straus was born on April 25, 1809, in Otterberg. He owned land in Schallodenbach and Mehlbach [4] in what is now Rhineland-Palatinate (then under the French flag) [5] and was a grain trader. He did not take an active part in the revolution of 1848, but was liberal and sympathized with it. [6]

Isaac's son Lazarus was possessed of considerable means, made in both agricultural and commercial pursuits. Being of liberal tendencies, he was involved in the revolutionary movement of 1848; he emigrated to the United States in 1854 and settled in Talbotton, Ga.
During the Civil War, 18 year old Isidor Straus ran the block-ade from Charleston, SC. He remained in Europe from July 1863 through the end of the war. We have not investigated, until now, the circumstances of this adventure and its larger historical perspective. Isidor's father Lazarus Straus and their family settled in Tal-botton, GA in 1854.
