Sherborne was founded as a cathedral school when, in 705 AD, King Ine of Wessex instructed Aldhelm, a churchman and distinguished scholar, to found a cathedral and college of clergy at Sherborne to relieve pressure from the growing see of Winchester.

Originally founded as a Cathedral School by Adhelm, King of Wessex, this is one of the oldest schools in the UK and was re-founded by King Edward V1 in 1550. Sherborne is an independent school providing an all-boys boarding (and day as a minority), education for about 570 pupils, from ages 13 to eighteen.
Founded by King Edward VI in 1550, we are one of just a few full-boarding, all-boys schools in the UK and this, together with our strong partnership with Sherborne Girls, is what makes Sherborne School special.
