Imperial College London (Imperial) is a public research university in London, England. Its history began with Queen Victoria's husband, Prince Albert, who envisioned a cultural area in South Kensington that included museums, colleges, and the Royal Albert Hall.
In 1907, the Royal College of Science, the Royal School of Mines and the City & Guilds College were combined to form Imperial College London. Imperial is home to around 23,000 students and 8,000 staff (2022-23).
Imperial College can trace its origin back to the Great Exhibition of 1851, held in nearby Hyde Park, under the direction of Prince Albert, the husband of Queen Victoria. The exhibition promoted British science, technology and industry to the world.
