The construction of "Ottawa Collegiate Institute, Glebe Building" was a slow process, and classes began in 1922 before it was complete, causing some inconveniences for students. Symbols of the OCI continue to adorn the entrance to the school. The building was officially opened in 1923.
Apr 15, 2022 · Glebe Collegiate was not initially founded as Glebe Collegiate. Instead, it was built as an expansion of the Ottawa Collegiate Institute (OCI ) which is known now as Lisgar; the OCI’s symbols can still be found on our school today.
Jun 10, 2022 · Construction began in October 1921, and the new collegiate institute opened its doors less than a year later. With the building not yet fully completed, the “official” opening was delayed until May 1923.

Originally, the school was built to support the student population at the Ottawa Collegiate Institute, now Lisgar Collegiate. As the student body continued to grow, Glebe became a separate school in 1931.

In 1919, the Adolescent School Attendance Act had made attending school compulsory until age 16, leading to a dramatic rise in secondary school enrolment.
GCI Alumni and 100th Anniversary. The first students came to Glebe in the fall of 1922. The school was officially opened in May of 1923. The building was officially opened in 1923. The rivalry between Glebe and Lisgar Collegiate Institute commenced soon after the division of the OCI. In one incident, a banquet was held at the Glebe building that included student clubs from both schools.
