In July 1983 the carrousel was opened to the public on the first day of the first Canal Fest, all of it celebrating the history of the Tonawandas. The historic factory building was purchased in 1984 and the long process of turning it into a full museum began.
It was first open to the general public in 1984, with a full operational carousel from 1916. Renovations included reconstruction of the original roundhouse and roof repairs. Other projects included restoring the original office building into an Education Center, and developing the Kiddieland Testing Park.
