Sep 22, 2021 · The International Chess Federation, FIDE, took control of the classical world championship in 1948. From 1993-2006, the title was split after the champion and challenger left FIDE. In those 13 years, six players held the title of the FIDE World Champion. Two of the six were also classical champions.
While the concept of a world champion of chess had already existed for decades, with several events considered by some to have established the world's foremost player, an event explicitly held to decide a world champion did not take place until 1886.
The current world champion is Ding Liren, who defeated his opponent Ian Nepomniachtchi in the 2023 World Chess Championship. Magnus Carlsen, the previous world champion, had declined to defend his title.
Carlsen became World Chess Champion in 2013 by defeating Viswanathan Anand. He retained his title against Anand the following year and won both the 2014 World Rapid Championship and World Blitz Championship, becoming the first player to hold all three titles simultaneously, a feat which he repeated in 2019 and 2022.

Aug 29, 2024 · After tough negotiations between both players, in 1886 took place the first officially recognized World Chess Championship. So in the year of 1886 Wilheim Steinitz was proclaimed as the first World Chess Champion. The final result was 10 victories for Steinitz, 5 for Zukertort and 5 draws.
Steinitz held the title of World Chess Champion from 1886 to 1894 after defeating Johannes Zukertort in the first official World Chess Championship match. Steinitz was a pioneer of positional chess and formulated the theory of “accumulating small advantages” over the course of a game.
