The Mary McLeod Bethune Scholarship (MMB) provides financial assistance to undergraduate students who meet scholastic requirements, demonstrate financial need, and attend Bethune-Cookman University, Edward Waters College, Florida A&M University or Florida Memorial University.
In 1904, Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune founded the Daytona Educational and Industrial School for Negro Girls with $1.50, Faith in God, and five negro girls. In 1923, Bethune successfully negotiated the merger of her school with the Cookman Institute in Jacksonville, Florida.
A missionary school for African American children opened near Bethune's area, and she attended this school, becoming the first in her family to get an education. She later got a scholarship to the Scotia Seminary, which is now known as Barber-Scotia College.
The Mary McLeod Bethune Scholarship Program, for Floridian students wishing to attend historically Black colleges and universities within the state, is named in her honor. [90] A statue of Bethune in Jersey City, New Jersey, was dedicated in 2021 in a namesake park across the street from the Mary McLeod Bethune Life Center. [91] [92]
