CAM PROFILES. Below is a typical use of a cam. A simple toy based on a simple character, is controlled by a cam and follower. Dia 1 shows the arm in its upmost position,. As the cam rotates in an anticlockwise direction, the follower falls (diagram 2) and so does the arm of the toy.
A CAM changes the input motion, which is usually rotary motion (a rotating motion), to a reciprocating motion of the follower. They are found in many machines and toys. A CA M has two parts, the FOLLOWER and the CAM PROFILE.
Mechanical toys use several types of mechanisms, because Cam toys are powered by a very large cam and even bigger cam follower which transfers the cam rotation to the working area of the toy. The cam is unevenly rotated by placing the rotator out of the ideal center.
CAM TOY EXERCISE. Below is a mechanical toy based on a CAM mechanism. As the handle on the eccentric cam is turned the top part of the egg shell lifts to reveal a face. The basic construction of the toy is also shown below. The ‘flat’ follower moves upwards and downwards as the cam rotates.
