Its flagship wine Único is a Gran Reserva that is aged for 10 years or more before release and is made from some of the oldest vines in the Ribera del Duero region. Valbuena 5°, by contrast, takes its name from the village where it is produced and is aged for five years before release.
- Ancient history. As far as most collectors are concerned, Vega Sicilia's history begins with David Alvarez, a billionaire industrialist who acquired the property in 1982.
- The first vintage. By 1882, Eloy Lecanda had 500,000 vines planted at Vega Sicilia; Bordeaux varieties, Pinot Noir, Tempranillo and Garnacha. Unfortunately, Lecanda could not make the estate financially viable and died in poverty in 1894.
- Enter the Alvarez. When Pablo Alvarez took control of Vega Sicilia from his father in 1982, the estate was not in the best of health. A lack of investment had taken its toll on the dilapidated winery and the vineyard area had shrunk to 80 hectares (198 acres), with the result that most of the annual production was made from bought-in grapes.
- Que terroir, terroir. All iconic wine estates like to talk about their dirt, and Vega Sicilia is no exception. According to Alvarez there are outcrops of limestone soils with a chalk content on the north-facing slopes while, on the valley floor, you'll find a mixture of clay, sand and gravel.
Valbuena is the purest expression of red wine at Vega Sicilia and is aged for five years between barrel and bottle, which lends its name to the end product: Valbuena 5º. The first year of ageing is done in oak barrels and it`s particularly important, using 75 % French oak and 25 % American oak.
Mar 1, 2002 · Unico is made essentially from Tempranillo (or Tinto Fino), Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec, while Valbuena is mostly Tempranillo, with more Merlot than Cabernet. The grape varieties are vinified separately when they come from young vines, but fermented together from the old, mixed plots.
