Bull riding is a rodeo sport that involves a rider getting on a bucking bull and attempting to stay mounted while the animal tries to buck off the rider. [1] American bull riding has been called "the most dangerous eight seconds in sports."
- THE RIDE. Riders grip a rope with one hand and raise the other. If they touch the bull or themselves with their free hand, they get no points. If they let go and fall off before eight seconds, they get no points.
- THE HISTORY. In 1600s Mexico, rodeo-like charreadas were staged as competition within festive, cultural events. Riders stayed on the bull until it stopped bucking.
- THE LEAGUE. The top bull riding league in the world is Professional Bull Riders. Founded in 1992 by a group of riders seeking to increase the sport’s profile, PBR sanctions events in the U.S., Canada, Australia and Brazil.
- THE TEAMS. PBR’s team competition was launched in 2022, with eight teams on the Camping World Team Series: The Austin Gamblers, Kansas City Outlaws, Texas Rattlers, Carolina Cowboys, Arizona Ridge Riders, Missouri Thunder, Florida Freedom and Nashville Stampede.
Riders who manage to stay on the full 8 seconds are judged and given a score that is worth up to 100 points, 50 points for the bull, and 50 points for the rider. Four judges award up to 25 points each to the rider and the bull. The scores are combined and then divided by two for the official score. This score is used to rank the rider and the bull.

Bareback bronc-riding, rodeo event in which a cowboy or cowgirl attempts to ride a bucking horse (bronco) for eight seconds. The horse is equipped with a leather and rawhide handhold “rigging” cinched on like a saddle.

The rider and the horse are scored separately by a panel of judges, meaning that both the horse’s elegance in bucking and the rider’s balance add ...
