    • I Want You To Want Me (LIVE) by Cheap Trick (1979) This is, in my mind, the undisputed king of the genre. At least, the live version is. Pay no mind to the mundane studio version.
    • Just What I Needed by The Cars (1978) This perfect song would also top my list of best new wave songs, rock songs, and The Cars songs. But the crunchy guitars and singalong chorus solidify this as a power pop song at its core, despite the new-wavy synthesizers.
    • Couldn’t I Just Tell You by Todd Rundgren (1972) Todd Rundgren wasn’t content with playing all the instruments on his breakthrough 1972 album Something/Anything?.
    • September Gurls by Big Star (1974) This isn’t my favorite Big Star song, but it certainly fits the power pop mold the best. Those jangly guitars, the slightly fuzzy lead, and the high-pitched yearning vocals have made this one of the band’s most prevailing songs.

  2. Power pop songs tend to be short and have memorable choruses/refrains. No long jams, etc (The Knack's " My Sharona" being an exception) and the virtuosity is reflected in indelible melodies and clever lyrics, not in drawn out, wanky solos or heavy-handed lyrical themes.

  3. I would say a majority of the singles they released between 1965 and 1967 qualify as power pop and are also great songs. I Can't Explain, My Generation, Substitute, The Kids Are Alright, I'm a Boy, Happy Jack, and some others are all great songs they put out in that era.

  4. 6 days ago · For example “Smalltown Operator” has a good song buried in there, but the heavy loud rhythms drown it out. There are some worthy songs here; check out “Everblue,” “Why Worry,” and “Someone Like You.” In fact, there are enough good ones to make this highly recommended, but don’t expect any ballads.

  5. Jun 7, 2020 · Badfinger – Baby Blue – 1972 – The number one song was the easiest decision of the list. The rest were changed a few times…this one for me is a no-brainer. This song is the perfect power pop song…strong vocals, Crunchy Brit guitar, great hook, and great melody
