I completely agree with both of you. On its own, I think the movie From Hell is a passable but not classic whodunit. As an adaptation, it's almost sacrilege. The graphic novel From Hell is a masterpiece of the medium and honestly one of my favorite pieces of historical fiction ever. Simply ingenious.

Much like the source material, the movie does a good job transporting the audience to the location of Whitechapel England in the Victoria era.

For an historical perspective of the Jack the Ripper crimes, best to watch an A&E documentary. But for a theoretical description of the crimes, and an artful depiction of a carefully constructed tale, definitely check out the very chilling, very calculated, and very good From Hell.
