Reddit source code has been archived years ago, and new code is not open source. You can get the old code up and running, but dependencies that it has are going to be outdated and full of security issues, and of course you will not have all the features currently available.

IMO looking at any codebase you've never seen before is hard, whether you're a beginner or not. That's why the best way to get started with open source is by contributing to projects you actually use. My first open source contributions were to libraries I used in a Python project.
You're not just shipping code, you're shipping container orchestration configs, database configs, load balancing logic, and a bunch of other shit that isn't portable. It's one thing to have the code for the services available; if your contributors can't run it, it's not really open source.
