Occidental College (informally Oxy) is a private liberal arts college in Los Angeles, California. Founded in 1887 as a coeducational college by clergy and members of the Presbyterian Church, it became non-sectarian in 1910. Our History. Founded in 1887—before Los Angeles had its first paved street, saw its first automobile, or made its first movie—Occidental is L.A.’s first and only liberal arts college. Like many small schools, we struggled early on.
Occidental College isn’t just any liberal arts college. It fully integrates the liberal arts and sciences with the cultural and intellectual resources of a global city.
Despite these obstacles, Occidental College persevered and became one of the top liberal arts colleges in the country. In 1910, the college became one of the first in the United States to offer courses in Asian politics and history.
