Carrie is a pick-me. After finishing the last episode of AJLT, on a whim I decided to rewatched the SATC movies. To recap: Carrie and her friends are in their mid 40s. First movie is about Big leaving her at the alter, her grappling with that, and then finally getting married in a low-key way.
The ending where she tries one last time to seek emotional consolation from her mother, only for her own blood plotting to kill her, is genuinely such a sad and depressing moment. Carrie is no saint which is understating things, but in that moment we realize that she’s still just a kid who’s seeking love but coming up empty every time.
