- Hughes’s influence. As writer, producer and director, it’s very much Hughes’ vision that we see up on-screen. Hughes’ direction is superb, with the strange isolated atmosphere of school at a weekend perfectly captured and the young cast shine thanks, in part, to the director encouraging them to bond and improvise on set.
- The cast. The so-called Brat Pack were all at their peak when filming Breakfast Club. Ally Sheedy was perfect as the kooky basket case and Molly Ringwald likewise as the ever-so-popular princess.
- Tackling teen issues with sensitivity and skill. Another aspect of The Breakfast Club that cannot be understated is how it handles typical teen issues with a sensitivity and deftness that can often be lacking.
- That montage scene. The film has of course got a few dated moments; the makeover scene and a couple of Bender’s less savoury comments among them. However, the one that really stands out is the unexpected reaction of Emilio Estevez’s Andy to his brush with marijuana.
“The Breakfast Club” uses a high school library and five teenage kids. The movie takes place on a Saturday. The five kids have all violated high school rules in one way or another, and they’ve qualified for a special version of detention: all day long, from 8 to 4, in the school library.

I just finished watching "The Breakfast Club" and it is by far one of my all time favorite movies now. It is a brilliantly crafted story and touches on the many aspects of a stereotypical high school life (at least at the time).
