Iquique (Spanish pronunciation:) is a port city and commune in northern Chile, capital of both the Iquique Province and Tarapacá Region. It lies on the Pacific coast , west of the Pampa del Tamarugal , which is part of the Atacama Desert .

Feb 29, 2024 · About an hour outside of Iquique is a collection of geoglyphs – carvings into the landscape known as the Gigantes Tarapaca or the Tarapaca Giant. There are a number of carvings but the most famous is the huge – 119 metres tall – human depiction with a puma head.

- Go Sandboarding. The most memorable and fun thing we did in Iquique though was definitely sandboarding down the colossal Cerro Dragon. Overlooking the city’s skyline, the immense hill is astonishingly the largest urban sand dune in the world.
- Humberstone and Santa Laura Saltpeter Works. Not to be skipped, the Humberstone and Santa Laura Saltpeter Works provide a very interesting look into the history of the city.
- Playa Cavancha. If after all the sightseeing and outdoor activities you want to kick back, relax and soak up some sun, then the endless Playa Cavancha is certainly the place to go.
- Baquedano Street. On the opposite side of the square to the ship is the bustling Baquedano Street. Another of the most popular attractions in town, the long avenue is lined by lots of lovely old historic buildings.
Iquique will steal your heart. Spend your day in front of the ocean, sunbathe on a deck chair, discover the Pacific seabed diving, or get on a jet ski to ride the waves. On its beaches nothing seems impossible and the nightlife is intensely felt in its bohemian establishments, where cultural mix is a constant.
