A warrant officer (WO) in the British Armed Forces is a member of the highest-ranking group of non-commissioned ranks, holding the King's Warrant, which is signed by the Secretary of State for Defence. Warrant officers are not saluted, because they do not hold the King's Commission, but are addressed as "Sir" or "Ma'am" by subordinates.
To become a Warrant Officer, you must be an enlisted active-duty, Army Reserve, or Army National Guard Soldier who demonstrates expert proficiency in your skill and craft. You must also show a drive for growth in areas like leadership and discipline, and meet other requirements.
It generally takes at least eight years of military service and completion of the Warrant Officer Candidate School to become a warrant officer in the UK. The application process can take several months, and the training program can last up to a year.
Warrant Officer Class One (WO1) is the most senior soldier rank in the British Army. A Regimental Sergeant Major, who is a WO1, is the senior advisor to the Commanding Officer. They are responsible for leadership, discipline and welfare in their regiment or battalion.
