Sep 29, 2024 · Gustav Stresemann was the chancellor (1923) and foreign minister (1923, 1924–29) of the Weimar Republic, largely responsible for restoring Germany’s international status after World War I. With French foreign minister Aristide Briand, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1926 for his policy.
As it was, Stresemann’s premature death in 1929 robbed Germany of one of the few political leaders not mired in self-interest, partisanship or extremism. Stresemann’s departure coincided with and perhaps opened the gates for Germany’s descent into dictatorship and totalitarianism.
