May 26, 2008 · He trained as a payload specialist involved in improving the efficiency of the Canadarm, the robotic arm used on the Space Shuttle Columbia. MacLean became the third Canadian to fly in space, serving on mission STS-52 aboard the Columbia from 22 October to 1 November 1992.
Dr. MacLean was the Chief Science Advisor for the ISS from 1993 to 1994 during which time he developed a plan that streamlined science management for the space station. He was then appointed Director General of the Canadian Astronaut Program for two years.
From 1974 to 1976, MacLean worked in sports administration and public relations at York University. From 1976 to 1977, he was a member of the Canadian National Gymnastics Team. He taught part-time at York University from 1980 to 1983.
