Saint Dominic, OP (Spanish: Santo Domingo; 8 August 1170 – 6 August 1221), also known as Dominic de Guzmán (Spanish:), was a Castilian Catholic priest and the founder of the Dominican Order. He is the patron saint of astronomers and natural scientists , and he and his order are traditionally credited with spreading and popularizing the rosary .
Dominic's body was placed in a humble sarcophagus in 1223. It was then moved to a shrine in 1267. Pope Gregory IX canonized St. Dominic on July 13, 1234, and his feast day is August 8. Saint Dominic is the patron saint of astronomers, the Dominican Republic, and the innocent who are falsely accused of crimes.
Though St. Dominic is often credited with the invention of the rosary, it is based on the Marian Psalter (150 Hail Mary’s in 10 groups separated by Our Fathers) that was developed years earlier by the Cistercians.
