   Was Conisbrough a Saxon castle?

   • While at Doncaster on his way north Sir Walter Scott saw Conisbrough, which he thought to be an Anglo-Saxon ruin, and recreated it as Coningsburgh Castle in his celebrated novel Ivanhoe (1819). The castle was taken into state guardianship in 1950, and in the 1960s the Ministry of Works carried out extensive masonry repairs.
