As wolfbm1 says, we can think of the coast as a line, in which case we use "on", but we can also speak of the coast as a frontier or boundary in which case we use "at". A house or village is static, so it is more likely to be described as on the coast.

I do not think that this is true because “gal” is old-fashioned. The same dictionary also tells us that “gal” is offensive like “chick”.
