There are a number of different ways fraudsters can try to scam you via Facebook Marketplace, whether you are a buyer or a seller. Here are some of the most common: 1. Fake payment confirmations

    • Gift card payment scams. In a gift card payment scam, a seller will try to get you to pay for the items they’re advertising with an untraceable prepaid digital gift card.
    • Facebook Marketplace Venmo scams. Venmo scams can take many forms, but a few of the most common include: Rental property deposit scams. Phishing scams. Overpayment scams.
    • Facebook Marketplace Cash App scams. Cash App scams are similar to Venmo scams. A scammer will pretend to be a seller or to have a property for rent, only to disappear once they’ve stolen your money (and possibly other people’s money).
    • Facebook Marketplace Zelle scams. A Zelle scam on Facebook Marketplace follows the same pattern as Venmo and Cash App scams. A scammer might try to get your account details by pretending to work for Zelle.
    • Paying or communicating outside of Facebook. How this scam works: Once you express interest in an item posted for sale, the seller might ask you to communicate with or pay them through a different platform.
    • Mailing items. How this scam works: In this scam, fraudsters ask you to pay them first and then never send the item. By agreeing to pay for an item up front, “buyers run the risk of not receiving the items they pay for, either via non-delivery or by being delivered anything but what they pay for,” says Chris Hauk, a consumer privacy expert at Pixel Privacy.
    • Selling counterfeit items. How this scam works: Don’t be fooled by a great deal on a designer purse or a rare gaming console. Facebook Marketplace is a hotbed for counterfeit or pirated items with price tags suspiciously below market rate.
    • Overpaying the seller. How this scam works: Believe it or not, sellers can get scammed by fraudsters too. In one common scheme, a buyer will use a stolen credit card to pay the seller more than the requested amount for the item, then claim to have made a mistake and request a partial refund.
