Jan 2, 1990 · St. Mary’s School moved from Chartres Street to the historic Quadroon Ballroom at 717 Orleans Avenue and became St. Mary’s Academy, the first secondary school for girls in New Orleans. Mother Magdalen Alpaugh served as Principal. January 2, 1915.

St. Mary's Academy is a private Catholic K-12 school in New Orleans, Louisiana run by the Sisters of the Holy Family. Founded in 1867, it is one of the oldest Black Catholic schools in the country. It admits girls and boys until grade 7, and admits only girls for grades 8-12.

Aug 14, 2017 · While St. Mary’s Academy has been a stalwart New Orleans institution, it has moved around the city during its 150 years. It opened on Chartres Street in 1867, then moved to Orleans Street in 1881. It moved to New Orleans East in 1965.
St. Mary’s Academy was founded on Christian Love and dedication by the Sisters of the Holy Family, December 3, 1867. It is one of the oldest high schools in the South. St. Mary’s first opened its doors on Chartres Street as a part of the sisters’ convent.
Saint Mary’s Academy’s long tradition continues as a private Catholic college preparatory co-educational elementary and a middle / high school for young women. In a family oriented atmosphere, Saint Mary’s is committed to educating the whole person.
