Aug 22, 2022 · Images for the Tumblr Dashboard must be at least 500 x 750 pixels in size, enlarged to a maximum of 2048 x 3072 pixels, and be at least 1280 x 1920 pixels in size for a 2:3 aspect ratio. JPG, PNG, GIF, and BMP file types are supported by Photo Posts, with a 20 MB file size limit.

Stay within the photo upload limits — 10 megabytes for motionless images and two megabytes for animated GIFs. So far, the largest header image size that I have accessed from Tumblr is 2048 pixels wide by 1152 pixels high (2048x1152). Update: the default headers are 3000x1055. Tumblr shows your header image at different sizes as needed.
