  1. Aug 15, 2024 · Vote up your favorite scary films that take place in the ocean, whether the danger is mainly in drowning, a hungry sea monster, or something more sinister. The open sea can be scary in and of itself, but when a deadly force enters the picture, it becomes downright terrifying.

    • No Reason (2010) First is a film by gore FX wizard Olaf Ittenbach called “No Reason”. “No Reason” is a movie that at present you can order overseas but that has yet to find proper US distribution.
    • The Burning Moon (1992) Olaf Ittenbach has been long heralded as a master of extreme cinema. His library of works proves this statement over and over with all sorts of horrific practical effects-based scenarios that rest heavily on gore and violence.
    • L inferno (1911) 2 An ol classic by film standards, you may have come across snippets of images over the years used in illustration or documentaries that cover the subject of Hell.
    • Hellraiser II: Hellbound (1988) You would expect every Hellraiser film to depict hell in some form or the other, though it was Hellraiser II: Hellbound that really took us into the abyss to visit the lair of the cenobites and the dreaded underworld per way of the “Lament Configuration,”.

  2. List of a few horror films set at sea or underwater or on lakes, etc. Not sure why I made the list, I just felt like it! Only adding films that are even remotely worth watching = Super Spider-Shark and 3-Headed Octopus-Woman won't be on this list!

    • Jaws (1975) (and it’s sequel franchise – give or take) A mainstay in water based films. Great use of score and tension building. The shark was a little cheesy for today’s standards….though it still works as a shocker.
    • Open Water (2003) (also had a part 2) Definitely not the best movie on this list, but its entirely a water based horror movie about being stranded in open water while sharks and starvation add to the tension of being alone.
    • Piranha (1978) | Piranha (2010) Ok, we got a classic and a successful remake all centered around lake fun and these man eating little vixens of the sea.
    • Deep Blue Sea (1999) One of the cooler shark movies. In fact Samuel L. Jackson gets chomped…worth prices of admission alone. Some didn’t care for CGI sharks, but with its strong cast, this movie has been a frequent re-watch for me.
