"The Substitute" has a tough, world-weary performance by Berenger along with a menacing classroom ambiance that makes "The Blackboard Jungle" look like Sunnybrook Farm. But the entire setup is too garish to be credible. And once Shale and his friends begin battling KOD in earnest, the movie settles into a gruesomely drawn-out action-adventure rut.
Our review: Parents say: ( 1 ): Kids say: Not yet rated Rate movie. This is an engaging movie, despite the "teacher teaching in a rough school" clichés. The Substitute is an Argentinian movie in which Lucio begins work trying to convert kids from the rough neighborhood where he himself grew up to literature and poetry.

The pacing isn’t perfect and the ending feels a little overblown, but Minujín’s quietness paradoxically succeeds in keeping the focus where it needs to be, and makes this one of the more interesting entries in the subgenre.
