When it comes to convoluted mythology, the Terminator franchise is hard to top. This is a series predicated on time travel and the conflict between fate and free will. Practically every new movie manages to rewrite the series' timeline and change the future. That winding road map is only becoming more complicated with the impending arrival of Terminator: Dark Fate, which will pick up after the events of Terminator 2: Judgment Day and the latest Terminator movie to reboot some sequels and continue others.

The Terminator saga begins in 1984's The Terminator, where it's revealed that humanity is nearly wiped out in 1997 when an artificial intelligence called Skynet is born. Shortly after becoming self-aware, Skynet takes control of the world's nuclear arsenal and wipes out most of humanity in an event known as "Judgment Day." Those who survived Judgment Day wage a desperate battle against the Terminators, Skynet's robotic enforcers (some of which can pass for human). However, a leader named John Connor manages to rally his fellow survivors into an organized resistance movement, beating back the Terminators and coming close to destroying Skynet once and for all in 2029.

In order to ensure its own survival, Skynet sends a T-800 Terminator unit back to 1984 to kill John's mother, Sarah Connor, and prevent the leader of the resistance from ever being born. In response, John Connor sends a soldier named Kyle Reese to rescue Sarah and help her survive Skynet's assassination attempt. This creates a serious temporal paradox. Kyle winds up falling in love with Sarah and impregnating her before his death, becoming the father of the very man who sent him back in time. And because a piece of the T-800 is recovered after its destruction, Skynet winds up giving humanity the tools it needs to create Skynet in the first place.

In Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Skynet again sends a cybernetic assassin back in time, only here it's to kill a now teenaged John Connor. This time, a liquid metal T-1000 unit is sent back to the early 1990s. In response, the resistance captures and reprograms a T-800 unit, sending it back to protect John and Sarah (who's spent the years since the first movie preparing herself and her own for the war to come).

The three team up with Miles Dyson, a Cyberdyne scientist who's been using the remains of the original T-800 to build what will eventually become Skynet. Dyson sacrifices his life to help destroy his work, and both the heroic T-800 and the T-1000 are completely annihilated in a steel mill. With no trace left of Skynet or the Terminator technology, Sarah and John confront an uncertain future where Judgment Day may never happen. This is basically the launching point for all subsequent sequels and spinoffs, as we've seen several different takes on what happens when Skynet's rise is no longer guaranteed.

Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines unfolds in the aftermath of Terminator 2. This sequel reveals that Sarah died of leukemia in 1997, and that her son has been in hiding ever since, hoping Judgment Day will never come. However, Skynet again sends a Terminator unit back in time. This highly advanced model, the T-X, is sent to 2004 and tasked with killing John, his future wife Kate Brewster and other members of the human resistance. The resistance responds by sending back a reprogrammed T-850 unit.

In this timeline, Skynet's rise is only delayed, not averted. John and Kate convince the T-850 to help them destroy Skynet and again try to prevent Judgment Day. But after both the T-850 and T-X are destroyed, the duo realize the secret government facility they thought housed Skynet is actually just a nuclear fallout shelter. John is faced with no choice but to wait out Judgment Day and begin rallying the survivors against the Terminators.

This ending plays directly into the fourth entry in the series, Terminator Salvation. Salvation takes place in 2018, 14 years after the delayed Judgment Day in Rise of the Machines. But though Skynet's rise is delayed, its evolution is accelerated. John and his fellow resistance fighters discover that Skynet is developing the T-800 unit sooner than expected, suggesting humanity may not even survive long enough to topple Skynet in 2029.

However, another complication arises in this timeline in the form of Marcus Wright, a new breed of human/Terminator hybrid. A flashback set in 2003 reveals that Marcus was convinced by Cyberdyne researcher Dr. Serena Kogan to donate his body to science after his execution. Needless to say, Marcus is surprised to wake up in a post-apocalyptic 2018 with a body more machine than man. Marcus rejects his Skynet programming, helping the resistance destroy the facility manufacturing the T-800. And when John is mortally wounded in the attack, Marcus sacrifices his life and donates his heart so that the leader of the Resistance might live.

The Terminator series made the jump to television in 2008 with Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. This series ignored the events of Rise of the Machines, instead serving as an alternate follow-up to Terminator 2. In this timeline, Sarah hasn't yet shown signs of her leukemia. She and John are maintaining a low profile in New Mexico in the yea...

Sarah, John and Cameron wind up travelling forward in time to 2007, where they set about trying to prevent Skynet's rise once and for all. That fight is complicated by the arrival of more Terminators and resistance fighters from the future. One of these new allies is Derek Reese, Kyle's brother.

The series was canceled after its second season, leaving fans with a huge, unresolved cliffhanger. The final episode sees John travel from 2007 to 2029. Unfortunately, because he wasn't around for this timeline's Judgment Day, no one in the human resistance has any idea who John Connor is. In effect, the alternate timeline of The Sarah Connor Chronicles winds up spawning yet another alternate timeline.

2015's Terminator: Genisys is a franchise reboot in the vein of 2009's Star Trek, using the fallout of time travel to rewrite the original Terminator saga. This reboot opens in familiar territory, as John Connor and his soldiers conquer Skynet in 2029, only to learn their enemy has sent a T-800 unit back to 1984. However, the timeline immediately diverges when Kyle Reese arrives in the past. There he finds that Sarah is no helpless waitress, but a hardened soldier trained by an aging T-800 she affectionately refers to as Pops. Pops was originally sent back to 1973, saving a young Sarah from another Terminator assassin. Sarah and Pops bring a swift end to the original T-800 threat in 1984, as well as a T-1000 sent to finish the job.

Plagued by strange visions and realizing that the timeline has been significantly altered by an unseen hand, Kyle convinces Sarah to travel with him to 2017. There they discover that a new OS named Genisys will serve as a vector for Skynet's global takeover. They also meet John Connor, realizing the leader of the resistance has been infected by Skynet's nanomachines and become an advanced T-3000 Terminator. While the T-3000 attempts to ensure Genisys goes live, it and Pops are destroyed in the magnetic field of a time machine (though Pops winds up returning to life as an upgraded T-1000). The movie ends with Kyle visiting his own younger self and warning him about Genisys, thus creating the prophetic visions Kyle experiences when he travels back to 1984.

The upcoming Terminator: Dark Fate continues the trend of recent Terminator sequels by partially rebooting the franchise. Dark Fate is a direct sequel to Terminator 2: Judgment Day, ignoring the events of Rise of the Machines, Salvation, The Sarah Connor Chronicles and Genisys. However, one thing Dark Fate has that all those projects lacked is the involvement of James Cameron. Cameron isn't directing this latest sequel (that instead falls to Deadpool's Tim Miller), but he is producing Dark Fate and striving to create the definitive sequel to Judgment Day.

Dark Fate is also the first sequel since Judgment Day to star Linda Hamilton as Sarah Connor. The film takes place several decades after the events of T2, with Judgment Day seemingly having been prevented. However, Sarah's war resumes when Skynet sends back a new Terminator Rev-9 model to assassinate a woman named Dani Ramos. The resistance counters by sending Grace, a human/Terminator hybrid seemingly similar to Salvation's Marcus Wright.

Both John Connor and Arnold Schwarzenegger's T-800 will play a role in the film, though it's unclear how much either character will actually appear. A young actor named Jude Collie has been cast as John, with the film reportedly digitally recreating Edward Furlong's likeness from T2. This suggests that John will only appear in flashback form and may have died some time before the events of Dark Fate. As for Schwarzenegger, the trailer suggests he could actually be playing the human who inspired the look of the T-800 rather than an actual Terminator (similar to the character Sgt. Candy seen in a deleted scene from Rise of the Machines.)

Once again. Dark Fate is intended to serve as the start of a new series of films. Time will tell if this hybrid sequel/reboot can succeed where Salvation and Genisys failed, but fans are hoping Cameron's involvement will cement Dark Fate as the lasting continuation of a long-running franchise.
