The fourth series of Heartbreak High ran for 26 episodes from June 16, 1996 to December 8, 1996 on Network Ten.

Production on the series was funded entirely by BBC2, after Network Ten cancelled the show after two years. However, Ten still aired the show to meet their local drama quota.

Series four of Heartbreak High begins with 10 series regulars, with Hartley High students Matt Logan (Vince Poletto), Allie Matts (Inge Hornstra), Con Bordino (Salvatore Coco), Danielle Miller (Emma Roche) and Katerina Ioannou (Ada Nicodemou), teacher Andrew Bell (Ian Bliss), principal Jim Deloraine (Stephen O'Rourke), and Con's mother Helen Bordino (Barbara Gouskos) and father Roberto Bordino (Ivar Kants), all returning to the cast. After three series as a recurring guest star, Alan Bolton (Jon Pollard) is elevated to series regular status.

The show undergoes a cast shake-up, with Jodie Cooper (Abi Tucker), Peter Rivers (Scott Major) and Sam Robinson (Kym Wilson) written off the show at the end of series three. Effie Poulos (Despina Caldis) disappears entirely without explanation, while Steve Wiley (Corey Page) is killed offscreen, the first few episodes dealing with the aftermath of his death. Sam is quickly replaced by teacher Ronnie Brooks (Deni Gordon).

Deloraine and Con are phased out of the show early into the series, with Deloraine retiring after his second heart attack, and Con leaving for a student exchange program in Santa Monica (presumably putting off his HSC for a year to do so). They are replaced by principal June Dyson (Diane Craig), and students Declan Costello (Rupert Reid) and Stassy Sumich (Tara Jakszewicz).

Midway through the season, Andrew leaves Hartley to join a research team in Antartica. He is replaced by teacher Tom Summers (Simon Baker-Denny), with student Charlie Byrd (Sebastian Goldspink) also joining the cast around this time. Later in the season, Allie leaves Hartley for a literary fellowship in London, while Tom is fired for getting her pregnant.

Episodes aired originally without titles. The alternative episode titles listed here are translated from the French version of the show, Hartley, coeurs à vif.
