Nov 10, 2014 · Then, they lose their communications. Matt races to assist Ryan to get herself free from the arm before the worst happens. A piece of debris hits the shuttle, shattering, a piece of shrapnel hits Shariff in the visor, he floats away from the shuttle, unconscious. Matt propels himself after him.
- INCITING INCIDENT. The space orbit Shuttle Explorer is docking at Hubble Space Telescope. Astronauts Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock) and Matt Kowalski (George Clooney) are taking spacewalks to fix Hubble’s faults.
- LOCK IN (End of Act One) The debris causes a chain reaction: more and more space objects are damaged and make a space storm that sweeps across the orbit.
- FIRST CULMINATION (Midpoint) Ryan puts on a Russian spacesuit and goes out of the Soyuz to get the parachute off. As she is doing this, the debris returns.
- MAIN CULMINATION (End of Act Two) Ryan falls into delusion. Matt “comes and tells her to use the landing rocket on the landing capsule.” Ryan wakes up, finds Matt isn’t with her.

Griffith’s Intolerance, Abel Gance’s Napoleon, Leni Riefenstahl’s Olympia, and Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds, as well as its most obvious precursor, Stanley Kubrick’s 2001. Call it blockbuster modernism.
