Girton College is one of the 31 constituent colleges of the University of Cambridge. The college was established in 1869 by Emily Davies and Barbara Bodichon as the first women's college in Cambridge.
Girton’s foundation was a bold step towards women’s full and equal participation in political, social and economic life. To see Girton’s history, landmark achievements, the lives of influential (if sometimes hidden) figures, and much more, over the 150 years, visit our fascinating timelines below.
Girton is a home from home… a link to the world of work, and a potentially life-changing experience. Today, there are almost 800 matriculated students, over one third of whom are graduates, together with a community of around 120 academic Fellows and around 135 operational staff.
It was established by Emily Davies and Barbara Bodichon to provide higher education for women. Davies's vision was to establish a college 'designed to hold in relation to girls' schools and home teaching a position analogous to that occupied by the universities towards public schools for boys'.
Girton is a 10-minute bus/15-minute cycle from Cambridge’s centre. The relaxed atmosphere, tight-knit community, and distance gives students the unique feeling of ‘coming home’ after busy days of work and play.
