George Jenkins, founder and Chairman Emeritus of Publix Super Markets Inc., was born in Harris City, Ga., Sept. 29, 1907. Growing up, he worked in his father's general store. In 1925, he headed to Tampa, Fla., at the age of 17 with hopes of making his fortune in the Florida real estate boom.

He was founder of Publix Super Markets Inc. and member of First United Methodist Church, Lone Palm Golf Club, Lakeland Yacht & Country Club and Augusta National Golf Club.
