Gamescom (stylized as gamescom) is a trade fair for video games held annually at the Koelnmesse in Cologne, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The 2019 edition of the world's largest gaming convention -- the 11th time it was held -- was visited by 373,000 visitors from more than 100 countries this year. Visitor growth slowed over previous years, as the expo is capping out and Gamescom is presumably limiting ticket sales to ensure that lines don't get longer and the halls aren't overcrowding. In 2018, 370,000 visitors came to Cologne, Germany, for the show.
A total of 1,153 companies exhibited at Gamescom, a 10% increase over last year.
This year marked the debut of Opening Night Live, the Geoff Keighley-hosted debut/trailer event, broadcast online on destinations like IGN. A total of 1,500 visitors watched the event live in person and the event had 500k viewers online across various channels. The debut event featured game developer Hideo Kojima, presenting the latest footage from Death Stranding.
IGN was the official Studio partner for Gamescom 2019, with a stage and production space in Hall 7, and broadcast content in both German and English.
Gamescom 2019 took place from Tuesday, August 20 to Saturday, August 24, 2018, in Cologne, Germany. The first day was restricted to media and industry/business attendees, although Koelnmesse invited around 3,000 fans and influencers to get in early. The show opened to the public on August 21.
Cologne is home to a population of around 1 million, making it the largest city in North Rhine-Westphalia and the fourth largest city in Germany. It is estimated that the city grows by around 500,000 people during the week of the event, attracting visitors from all over Europe.
Since 2009, Gamescom has been held in Cologne (Köln), Germany. There is no Gamescom USA, but the show expands to Asia with a Singapore-based event in 2020.
