David John Sainsbury, Baron Sainsbury of Turville, HonFRS, HonFREng [1] (born 24 October 1940) is a British politician, businessman and philanthropist. From 1992 to 1997, he served as chairman of Sainsbury's, the supermarket chain established by his great-grandfather John James Sainsbury in 1869.
In 1997 he entered the House of Lords as a Labour peer, as Baron Sainsbury of Turville. David Sainsbury founded the Gatsby Charitable Foundation in 1967, which funds projects in scientific research, engineering education, public policy, African economic development and the Arts.
David Sainsbury became Lord Sainsbury of Turville in October, 1997. He was appointed Minister of Science and Innovation from July 1998 until November 2006, and had responsibility for the Office of Science and Technology, Innovation, Space, the Bioscience and Chemical Industries, and the Patent Office.
